Science Week Competition

Big Science Competition

Earlier this year, students had the opportunity to compete in the Big Science Competition.  This competition gives students a chance to test their science knowledge and understanding against students around Australia.  The Big Science Competition also gives them a valuable opportunity to practice their decoding of multiple choice questions and a valuable opportunity to complete a test under test conditions.

This year we had an unprecedented amount of student taking place, and all were rewarded with an awards lunch last Friday.

Science Week Competition

National Science Week was delayed for one week at Wantirna College due to our Athletics Carnival.  The first Science Week Challenge for Wantirna College saw 4 teams challenged to create a trebuchet, that could fire a mini marshmellow the greatest distance but with accuracy.

The students were given a limited supply of materials to work with, and they could trade materials with other teams if they wished.  The materials that they used included icypole sticks, skewers, straws and masking tape.

After working with great dedication over 4 lunchtimes, with much trial and error, refining their trebuchets, they had a fire off in C-block corridor.

The maximum distance was 69 cm, but accuracy was also consideration and the teams needed to land in the target.

After much deliberation, the first prize was split between two teams, one was more accurate but the second landed their marshmellows consistently at a further distance.

A big thankyou and congratulations to the competing teams:

Ben Hall, Emma Lawler, Ulysses Rigano, Jamie Soo

Evan Henderson, Jason Henderson, Kane Yeomans, Nicholas Shearer

Ronin Morris, Tyler Simpson

Tommy Dam, Josh Driessen, Eric Lang, Stanley Low
