Gabby Newton is No.1

GABBY GOES NUMBER 1!

College Captain and star athlete, Gabby Newton had her professional football dreams realised on Tuesday when she was selected at pick 1 in the AFLW draft held at the Melbourne Showgrounds. As a member of the AFL dubbed ‘holy trinity’, Gabby took out the top spot in Australia ahead of other top draft pick favourites; Lucy McEvoy and Georgia Patrikios.

Gabby has been representing Greensborough College in the school football team since Year 7, and as a Year 9 student, won the best on ground medal at the Senior Girls State Championship game against Hallam.  Gabby has been a member of the College Athletic Development Program (ADP) for the past three years and was the ADP Scholarship recipient in 2018 and 2019. Despite her gruelling training regime she was able to remain injury free, enabling her to perform at her best for the duration of 2019.

Gabby has long juggled both basketball and football and this year decided to focus her attention on football. Gabby captained the Northern Knights to a premiership in the NAB Under 18 girls’ competition and was also selected in the All-Australian team after the AFLW Under-18 National Championships on the Gold Coast.

Gabby will debut in the AFLW for the Western Bulldogs - reuniting with her Vic Metro coach, Nathan Burke and Northern Knights teammates; Nell Morris-Dalton, Britney Gutknecht and Isabella Grant.

We are so proud of you Gabby and wish you all the best in your future football pursuits as well as your upcoming final Year 12 exams.
