Henry Kendall celebrates NAIDOC Week

Henry Kendall students celebrated NAIDOC Week at Gosford Public School last week. Our students engaged in Aboriginal dancing, storytelling, games and art activities. We would like to say a big thank you to Ella Merritt from Gosford Public who organised this amazing day. Afterwards Jonathon Wright from Dhinewan Mentoring came over to our Aboriginal Resource Room and spoke to our students about the importance of culture and how special our room is.

Jordan Sibley placed Jonathon's hand on our wall and we would all like to thank Jonathon for the time he spent with our students.

Max Potential

Year 11 students Holly Miller and Sarah Wade completed the Connect Group 2 session for Max Potential at Gosford RSL on Tuesday 18 June. Holly and Sarah, along with the other scholarship recipients, presented their personal expressions to the group. These expressions reflected their Max Potential journey and how the program's concepts are developing their interpersonal and leadership skills.

Their next event will be the Max Potential Showcase to be held at the RSL on Thursday 22 August between at 3pm when they will have the opportunity to celebrate their community service projects. Holly has already begun collecting personal care items under "Packages for Patients" which will be donated to Gosford Hospital. Please see the attached flyer. Sarah will be supporting the RSPCA with a focus on items for and possible adoption of the dogs the RSPCA currently has in its care.

Congratulations to both Sarah and Holly on their efforts and contributions to our community.

Interact

Interact would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported Soups and Socks Day. It was great to see so many wearing colourful socks on the day. We had a fantastic response and filled over 4 large tubs with donations for Coast Shelter. Coast Shelter were extremely grateful to receive so many warm socks and cans of soup for those in need this winter.

Mock Trial

On Friday 14 June the Henry Kendall High School Mock Trial Team went up against Central Coast Grammar in Round 4 of the Mock Trial Competition. The case was a criminal one and we were the prosecution. With most of the evidence being circumstantial it was a hard case to win. Grammar won by a small margin of 5 points. Congratulations to our team, Thomas Whelan, Oliver Worrad, Ainslee Fernandes, Adrian Crnalic, Zoe Davis and Yasmin Long who fought hard and did an amazing job.

Teacher Professional Learning

I was excited to attend the Learning Support Conference on the 30 May 2019 at The Entrance Leagues Club.

It was organised by our local APLAS team and was facilitated by members of our Learning Support Network.

Session 1 focused on behaviour management in the classroom, our new APLAS Eva Brzozowska ran this session. She included information on Interpreting behaviours and triggers in our students, she gave a variety of strategies teachers can use when responding to students and their emotions.

Teachers from Henry Kendall High are receiving a weekly email including these suggested behaviour management strategies.

Session 2 looked at Profiling and Programing a student with additional social and emotional needs. This was led by James Treece and Kelly Doyle from Kariong Mountains High. They focused on a student case study looking at the methods of gathering evidence, the  collaboration with support agencies and the programing to ensure the student was empowered and able to move forward.

Session 3 we were introduced to Susan Barry from NESA, she talked about the importance of making adjustments for students with additional Learning and Support needs, she focused on both programming and assessments. She gave examples of a variety of adjustments teachers could use to enable all students to access the curriculum.

These conferences are an excellent opportunity to Network with our local Learning and support team, sharing ideas and information.
