Year 8, 10 and 12

Adviser Reports

Year 8

There has been a noticeable increase in the level of maturity across the Year 8 cohort this semester. Students are engaged in their learning and are interacting well with each other in social situations. They are learning to problem solve and work collaboratively with their peers and teachers. I am constantly preaching to the students about the importance of being "good people" and it is pleasing to see that this message is being received. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who are obviously instilling similar values into their children.

Year 8 are to be congratulated on the way they have navigated the most busy assessment period of their time at Henry Kendall High School so far.  They are demonstrating a range of skills across all subject areas and the teachers have been impressed with the overall level of knowledge and skills. Time management is the key to managing busy assessment periods and this is a valuable life skill.

This term saw both the Cross Country and Athletics carnivals. I was very impressed at the attendance and participation levels across Year 8, not to mention the athleticism of many of our students. I was also proud at the support that Year 8 were giving each other and the encouragement to "do your best".

Cooper Schoch, Samantha Edwards-McCallan, Brayden Tory, Kai Neale, Emmett Hartley, Lachlan Gunn, Sam Horn, Brendan Ackoski, Ernest Leseberg, Julie Fabroa, Georgia Muspratt, Phoebe Kostalas, Posie Nuttall, Kaylee Kaczmarczyk, Lili Gottlieb, Max Finn, Kai Neale, Chase Aldridge, Callum Kennedy, Alex McGavin, Ben Hunter, Excel Egwutaha, Ella Lauchlan, Skyla Bedford, Phoebe Kostalas, Mikayla Godwin, Kaylee Kaczmarczyk and Tegan Kirwood were all particularly impressive.

In Week 8, Ms Cortaville-Smith organised and ran a Careers Day for Year 8. This involved a range of presenters and guest speakers. Amongst other things, students were asked to think about what the world will look like in the future, what employable skills they currently have, what employable skills they may need to develop, what industries they may like to gain employment in.

As always, our Vivo reward system has been operating. Congratulations to Linden Barber, Lateesha Mead, Alydia Dumpert, Lachlan Gunn and Charlotte Yu who were the top Year 8 Vivo earners for Term 2.

Year 10

Its been a busy term for Year 10 with assessment tasks, excursions, sport, music, immunisations and some big decisions to make!  From reading through their reports it is obvious that the majority of students are working to the best of their ability and achieving some great outcomes. Some students have been very involved with extra- curricular activities and the benefit of this to students cannot be understated. Examples are fundraising, Interact, On Track, Zone sports and sporting teams, Come and Try Day and Walk and Talk.

Stand Tall was an excellent experience and well attended by Year 10 students .  There was an amazing array of speakers and performers who promoted positive messages to the students about overcoming adversity and encouraging positive mental health.

Year 10 students have also had the opportunity to attend Careers Days and Try a Skill Day. There were fantastic opportunities for the students to gain some insight into future pathways particularly at a time when they were making subject selections for Year 11 and 12.

Some reminders:

  • Senior jackets – students should already have given their size and names for the back of the jacket to me. Orders will only be placed for students who have paid in full. First instalment of $60.00 is due Friday 30 August and second instalment of $49.95 is due Friday 27 September.
  • Stage 6 Preparation Program first payment due Thursday 1 August.
  • Year 10 Interview Day – Tuesday 23 July. There will be no normal lessons for Year 10 on this day. They need to report to the library at their designated time, dressed for their interview and they should come prepared with their resume and some ideas and research on their future directions.

So it’s a busy term coming up for Year 10!  I encourage parents and students to keep an eye on the calendar so they don’t miss important deadlines. Any problems or questions please don’t hesitate to phone or email me.

Year 10 Adviser

Year 12

As a cohort, I have been extremely proud of the perseverance displayed by our year group this term. Many of you have shown a strong desire to achieve and have applied yourself with diligence. I encourage you to continue this work ethic and support each other in your journey toward the HSC.

Henry Kendall High School would like to congratulate Mason Colwell of Year 12 on his awesome achievement! On Saturday 22 June, Mason received his blue jacket from the NSW Touch Football Association. Mason is now an elite NSW state referee for touch football. He is a Level 4 referee and this is a milestone in moving through the ranks of national and international referees. This is an incredible achievement for Mason's age and Henry Kendall High School is very proud of your achievements.

Year 12 were given the opportunity to participate in the Bunnings BBQ fundraiser which took place on Saturday 29 June. Students cooked up a storm from 8.00am to 4.00pm with fundraising going toward our Year 12 formal and the gift to the school. Thank you Mrs James and all our volunteers who  helped out on the day.

With the holiday period upon us, there is an opportunity for the students to reflect on their progress and plan for the upcoming term. I would like to encourage all students to speak with their teachers prior to the break so that they can use their time efficiently and focus on areas that need improving. It is essential that students work hard over the break and create a set of study notes that can be revised upon leading into the trial exams. I also encourage you to set some time aside for hobbies and things you enjoy to ensure you remain balanced and rested leading into term 3.

Thank you for another fantastic term Year 12. I look forward to a fun and exciting final term together. Have a safe and happy holiday.
