Resurrecting the Wood Shop

Bill Cleveland (Past Preshil Teacher and Parent)

We are very excited and humbly thankful to have Bill helping us resurrect the wood shop at Arlington. Bill has been coming for the past few months to repair and clean all the tools in the hope that we can find someone to run a small woodworking elective for our Arlington children.

Some of the tools are in desperate need of sharpening so we would be grateful if anyone is able to assist in this area.

The Bone Sparrow

Zana Fraillon ( Alumni Cohort 1998)

Students are currently enjoying our recently acquired range of Young Adult Fiction, The Bone Sparrow - by Zana Fraillon.

This is a powerful and beautifully written book.

Subhi is a refugee. Born in an Australian immigration detention centre after his mother fled the violence of a distant homeland, life behind the fences is all he has ever known. But as he grows, his imagination grows bigger too, until it is bursting at the limits of his world. One night Jimmie arrives, a scruffy impatient girl who appears from the other side of the wires, carrying a notebook written by the mother she lost. Subhi and Jimmie might both find a way to freedom, as their tales unfold. But not until each of them has been braver than ever before.

Peter Singer On What Really Matters

Peter Singer (Alumni 1964)

Every day we make ethical choices: what to eat, what to wear, how to get to work, where to shop, whether to give money to someone in need. How should we make these ethical choices? Do our choices matter?

Join us as philosopher Peter Singer guides us in a discussion of ten things that many of us believe really matter in our lives today. There will be conversation, debate and plenty of big questions as we put our rational selves to work to think deeply about our ethical responsibilities and what it means to lead a good life.

The Tortured Tree

By Shirley Beaumont

Ex resident of the Cathryn Booth Girls Home (Blackhall Campus front lawn)

After attending a reunion for the orphanage in 2006, Shirley returned in 2014 to take these photos below. She also wrote of the tree;

"I truly love this tree it says quite a lot artistically speaking. I look at it from all angles and saw an amazing piece of Natures Art at work."
