Every game needs an umpire!
We all know the saying that there is no game without an umpire and I was reflecting the other day on how many of our students may umpire in our local junior sporting leagues and I would love to find out who actually does umpire and what sport they umpire in their communities. There are many great reasons to umpire a sport including increased knowledge of the rules, fitness, feeling of service or connectedness to your community, making new friendships and maybe you'll earn some extra pocket money too!
I would love to see more of our College students umpiring in the local Hamilton sporting competitions so if you or your child is interested let me know and I can get them the contact details necessary.

Division 5
College Hurricanes went down to Coleraine 1-0. Congratulations to Hugh Stratmann on playing his first game of hockey. Macey Hermon played a great match, and was ‘best on ground’ for the Hurricanes. She was ably supported by Ben Walker and Izzy Adamson.
Division 4
College Crusaders played College Chiefs in a balmy Saturday afternoon fixture. The sun shone brightly, as did the skills on the field. Crusaders prevailed 2-0, but the match was much closer than the score suggests. Best for the Chiefs were Amelia Gilling in the midfield, Jack Wall up front, and Nina Pern and Mitzi Adamson in defence. For the Crusaders, best on ground went to Olivia Allen. She was well supported by Isabelle Musson, Owen Priestley, Tom Stratmann and Natalie Featherston. Goal scores were Emily Ash and Olivia Allen.
College Rebels went down to a strong Coleraine Maroon side 3-1. Luke Marshall played a terrific match in goals. He was well supported by goal scorer Hamish Boyd Walsh, Gabe Marshall, Jorja Hermon and Captain Archie Cameron. The team is finding its feet, and playing with increased confidence. The 2015 Division 5 players have certainly stepped up, and are at home in Division 4 in 2016. Harley Milich is showing good control with the ball, and is enjoyed playing on a full field.

HOCKEY SUCCESS
Congratulations to Emily Johnston who has just been announced in the U18 South Australian Women’s State Team for 2016. The teams were chosen after two trials held on the weekends of 23rd April & 1st May at the State Hockey Centre.
Over 40 girls attended the first trial, with 26 athletes invited to attend the second trial on Sunday 1st May.
Emily will be in action from July 8 – 17 in Launceston, Tasmania.
Emily will begin training this coming Sunday.
We wish her every success.
DIVISION 1 WOMEN
What an outstanding brand of hockey the Division 1 Women played on Sunday! It was probably the best team game I have had the pleasure of being a part of. What a privilege it was to witness the speed and skill of not only the young guns in the side but also Mrs Nichols and Mrs Williams who are both in career best form. It is impossible to pick the better players in the 7-0 victory over Demons. Each goal was set up by quick passing, teamwork and smart finishing. Mrs Williams and Claudia Roberts both scored twice; Phoebe Sweeney, Hannah Nichols and Maddi Mutch were also amongst the goals. The girls have a bye this weekend and then meet Monivae in what should be a great game.

ROUND 3 COLLEGE SCORCHERS VERSUS MONIVAE SAINTS
The College Scorchers girls demonstrated what they could do with an almost full complement of players taking Monivae Saints 3 goals to 1 in their first win for the season. Outstanding play by Isabelle Musson, Maddy Rowe and Ruby Cush kept the pressure on Monivae Saints the whole game, with Maddy Rowe scoring all three goals. Kate Delany was sensational as goalkeeper, making some very valuable saves when Monivae saw an opportunity to score. Lana McMahon and Nikita Cavill were highly effective in defending, creating many stoppages in the centre. A very physically demanding game with a pleasing final result.
MRS URSULA MURPHY
Boys' Hockey
College Blue Under 16s scored a sound 6-3 victory over Monivae last Saturday. The boys were able to move the ball very effectively at times. There were some excellent passages of play and it was good to see other attempts made to look for a team mate. Some skill errors caused problems but it is still very early in the season and the boys have had little time together at training so far. They show the potential of being a very good team and Mrs Nichols is quite excited by their possibilities. Saturday's goal scorers were Will Manifold (3), Ferg Roberts (a superb backstick shot!), James Sutherland (the best team goal of the day) and Max Green. Sami Zehir led the team well and created a strong presence on the ball, Will Ash made some fine saves in goals, Tãne Nelson worked hard in midfield and Jonothan Lee positioned himself very well (and he is still learning the game!). The boys seemed in control of the game throughout but must be careful not to get caught watching the game: stay involved!
Blue had the bye.
At Open level, College met Bulls on Sunday night. We struggled to get on the front foot and found ourselves chasing our more experienced opponents before I felt we started to open up some opportunities late in the first half. Josh Cavill in goals, Andrew Robertson and Captain Josh Nichols were amongst our better players before the break (and each continued to play well in the second half). Bulls took over for part of the second half and we were left watching at times when they continued to run. Pleasingly, the boys regrouped and scored two goals for the half, both at penalty corners: the first a delightful drag flick by Liam McMaugh and the second by Josh Nichols after a great one-two with Nick Lacey. We have the bye next week and the chance to regroup; Bulls have set a standard for us to emulate as the season progresses.
Hockey Victoria is reminding those wishing to nominate for Under 13 state teams to do so soon (I think the deadline is in early June but check the website!) so they can be observed during Junior Country Week.

Help Wanted
Due to the limited number of teams in the Under 16 competition, the Association is considering the idea of finding several former or willing “older” players (fathers, perhaps!!) who would be willing to form a team, which would have restrictions with regard to rules applied to them re hitting and so on, which would play the boys with the bye, at least every now and then. Games would be played early on Saturday mornings, I expect.
If there are any Dads or other interested older players out there, please let me know as soon as possible: we have a good number of names already. It could be a lot of fun!
