Learning in J03

Junior School J03 Sach is sharing the learning taking place in their class…

It has been an exciting second term for Preps at ‘The Springs’

In reading, we have just finished learning all 26 letters of the alphabet! Each week we have been reading 1-2 new pages of Milo’s Birthday Surprise book where we introduce new letters through the characters that Milo the Monkey invites to his birthday party. Milo’s friends are always too busy to attend - or so Milo thought until his friends threw him a surprise party! As a celebration of learning all 26 letters of the alphabet, Prep classes threw their own surprise party for Milo where we were able to acknowledge this amazing accomplishment with students. Ben the Bear brought bananas, Daisy the dog brought donuts, Gabby the Goat brought grapes, Milo the Monkey brought marshmallows, Wilbur the Whale brought watermelon and Uncle Upton even brought an upside-down cake! To say they were excited is an understatement!

As part of our Indigenous Studies Inquiry topic, the Preps had the amazing opportunity to visit the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens on their first-ever school excursion! At school, the Preps have learned about Dreamtime Stories, and they have absolutely loved using Indigenous symbols to create stories of their own. We have also been learning about the importance of using kind words.

In Mathematics this term, we have been working with numbers to 20. Check out J03’s solution to the challenging task: how many different ways can you make 20? We used lots of different hands-on materials, and some students were even able to reason that you need two groups of ten to make 20!

Working with numbers to 20 this term has helped to prepare our Preps to begin learning about addition – we can’t wait to see how they grow and become more and more capable mathematicians!
