さむいです(pronounced ‘samuides’) which means ‘cold’ is the Japanese Word for the rest of Term 2 and the first week of Term 3.
You can simply use ‘さむいです’ (‘samuides’) instead of ‘cold’ when you feel cold in the classroom and out in the yard. Please be careful, ‘さむいです’ (‘samuides’) does NOT mean ‘cold to touch’.
Thank you / ありがとうございます(pronounced ‘aligatoh gozaimas’) for your continuing support for our Japanese program.

Japanese Hiragana learning
Students in Grades 1 and 2 have been learning to say the following single stroke hiragana characters (Japanese basic phonetic script)く(Ku) し(Shi) そ ( So) つ (Tsu) て( Te) の ( No) ひ ( Hi) へ ( He) る ( Ru) ろ ( Ro) and ん ( N).
They have been learning to write the single stroke hiragana characters (pictured below). In addition, they have been playing memory games to help them recognise the single stroke hiragana characters and their sounds.
At home you can help your child learn to recognise the sounds for the above single stroke hiragana characters by downloading an app called Hiragana Memory Hint. Next, click the hiragana table and click the above single stroke hiragana characters to listen to their sounds.
‘Learning should not only take us somewhere,
it should allow us later to go further more easily.’

At Valkstone Primary School, we encourage our students to be critical and creative thinkers and to develop skills that are crucial for 21st century living. In 2022 we explicitly teach our students the Valkstone Primary School Learning Dispositions. These dispositions assist the children in becoming Thinkers, Researchers, Self-Managers, Communicators and Collaborators. Teaching these dispositions helps the students to continue with their journey of ‘learning to be learners’.
We look forward to continuing this learning journey this year and beyond.
