LANGUAGES

For the first half of this term, 5 students from the University of Melbourne were involved in a mini- internship with our Year 10 to 12 Italian classes.  These students attended for one hour a week and were asked to participate in a range of capacities:

  • creating material
  • working with teachers in class
  • individual/small group coaching
  • in-class presentations

These students are studying Italian, not teaching, so the focus was on the use and application of Italian in a work environment. Many thanks to our Italian teachers Ms Concetta Calgaro and Ms Elena Camera for welcoming these students into their classrooms.

We hope that both our students and the students from the University of Melbourne benefited equally from this initiative.

Japanese

Our Year 10 Japanese class spent some time in semester one working on vocabulary and grammar related to shopping, food and ordering in a restaurant. It seemed most appropriate that we enjoy some Japanese food too. The Year 10 students cooking skills were not being assessed, but if they were it would have been A+ all round! Our menu consisted of gyoza, yakisoba, okonomiyaki, dango, natto (a particularly “interesting” dish), rice and green tea.  Gochisosamadeshita!

MRC

The MRC promoted National Reconciliation Week as a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Informative and interactive displays were created to engage the students.

We also hosted the Grade 1 & 2 students from Sacred Heart Primary School, sharing stories with a First Nations focus. Reading “Colours of Australia” by Bronwyn Bancroft.  It was a wonderful event which produced amazing artwork reflecting the colours of Fitzroy, copies of the artwork are now displayed in the MRC for all to enjoy.

SYNERGY

Year 9 MacKillop spent a beautiful Winter’s morning doing the Walking the Birrarung guided walk. This is a highlight of Synergy’s First Nations’ Immersion.  Students were taken on a journey through time pre colonization living on the land in the centre of Narrm, the place we now call Melbourne. This was especially significant as we celebrated National Reconciliation Week at Academy.
