Team Spirit is Our Competitive Edge

We have had a big month of sport in May at the Academy. There have been many sports to be involved in and some exceptional results have come our way.

Volleyball

Our Junior, Inter and Senior teams competed at the One Day School’s Cup from May 11 – 13. After a couple of COVID interrupted years to the volleyball program, our students were so excited to be competing again. Our teams competed at an exceptional standard, and we have taken so much away from the experience.

Our Senior A team claimed the Silver medal and congratulations goes out to these students who have committed to two training sessions a week to develop their skills. Bec Arena, our senior volleyball coach, is to be congratulated on her commitment and drive to getting the best out of her players.

Basketball

Our teams competed in the SCSA Basketball competition on Friday, May 13. This was a student free day; however, our students were so keen to participate that our coaches supported this decision to take their teams to this tournament. Many thanks to Ms Siobhan Taylor, Mr Rob Huxtable, Ms Alex Cowin and Mr Aeneas Gallivan for giving up their time to support our students.

It was another successful day, with the Seniors winning the tournament and our Inters just missing out in the final by a solitary point. Congratulations to Zara Komarnycki and Ms Alex Cowin for their hard work in coaching our Seniors to the win.

Athletics

Our Athletics team competed in the SCSA competition out at Lakeside Stadium on May 27. The team was decimated throughout the week with students getting the flu and injuries to some of our best athletes from the House Carnival.

On behalf of the Physical Education team, we could not have been more proud of our students. They competed with incredible spirit all day, filling in events where they could. Some highlights were Lucy Delbridge winning her events by a country mile, Emilia Rossi passing 5 competitors in the last 100m to win the Junior 1500m, Our Year 8 Triple Jumpers (Zoe Dafnias & Lucy Gauder) easily winning their Triple Jump events, and, at one stage, we had a run of 7 wins in a row in the Intermediate 100m races.

We finished 3rd overall which was a SENSATIONAL achievement.  A big thank you to Ms Tanya Vajda, Mr Rob Huxtable, Ms Alex Cowin and Ms Jo Gardner for their commitment to the team and ensuring events were filled. Your positivity allowed our girls to get out of their comfort zone and give anything a go.

Student Achievement

Emma Winfield is a Year 11 Academy student with a bright future. Netball Australia recently announced the 62 athletes who will form the 17/Under and 19/Under National squads for 2022/23 with 11 Victorians named. The selection follows the National Netball Championships that were held in Hobart in late April.

Emma has been chosen to represent the 17/Under side and this is an extraordinary achievement. She is humble in her achievements and very excited to be competing at the National level. Emma is on the right of the photograph. We look forward to seeing Emma develop her skills and achieve every success in the future.
