STEM

STEM Education is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry and critical thinking.

SCIENCE

Georgia Adams from 9 Melba and Olivia Moffat from 10 Green have both been accepted into the Girl Power in Engineering & IT program. Olivia has been participating in this program since last year.  Elise Dabbs from 9 Barak, has been accepted into the Zoos Victoria Youth Leadership program.

By participating in the Girl Power in Engineering and IT program., Georgia and Olivia have made a commitment that will carry through to Year 11 and Year 12.

In the first stage of the program, Year 9 students attend a camp during the Term 2 holidays at University of Melbourne. During this camp, students have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about careers in Engineering & Information Technology
  • Participate in hands-on interactive workshops
  • Interact with University of Melbourne engineering and IT students
  • Hear from industry and our academic staff about engineering and IT issues
  • Form a network of likeminded individuals

In the second stage of the program, Year 10 students will have the opportunity to complete the Faculty of Science work experience program and can choose from a range of disciplines including engineering and IT.

The third and final stage of the program facilitates mentoring opportunities between Year 11 and 12 students and University of Melbourne Engineering and IT students.  Here is what Georgia had to say about her participation in this program so far.

“The Girl Power Engineering and IT program is an initiative run by Melbourne University for young girls who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). It is a four-year program, beginning in Year 9 through to Year 12. I was lucky enough to be accepted into the Girl Power program this year, and will spend three days over the holidays learning about careers in engineering and IT, as well as participating in interactive workshops. In Year 10 you will have the opportunity to undertake the University of Melbourne  Faculty of Science work experience program. The final stage of the Girl Power program in years 11 and 12, concentrates on mentoring opportunities, with IT and Engineering students from University of Melbourne.

Elise’s participation in the Zoos Victoria Youth Leadership program has already started and will continue during Term 3.  Here is what Elise has to say about her experience in this program so far.

“My name is Elise Dabbs and I’m a Year 9 student here at the Academy. I have recently been accepted into Zoos Victoria's Youth Leadership program, which allows a selected group of 30 high school students from across Victoria to grow and develop their science knowledge and leadership skills. The program runs for seven months between April and September, with 11 sessions occurring during this time. During the sessions, we get to meet professionals, go behind the scenes and discover Victoria’s three zoos.   As well as expanding our knowledge and skills during this program, we’re also helping Zoos Victoria to start a new community program targeting soft plastics and their effect on the environment, mainly focusing on marine ecosystems. During the program, we will collect research and gain ideas on how to help the program be as successful as it can possibly be.”

Well done and good luck with the programs!
