Assistant Principal's Report

Happy Holidays

This is the last newsletter for Term 3, and I would like to wish our students and their families a wonderful school holiday.  All students have finished today, Friday 16th of September at 2:30pm for two weeks.  School will reopen on Monday 3rd October.

I would personally like to thank all families who supported our Lolly in a Bottle Fundraiser. Our two lucky winners were Deegan 4B and Maddy 4A.  The money raised from this fundraiser was $160 and will go towards future playground equipment.  I would like to thank Jennifer Maypiece for sourcing the bottles and lollies and putting the bottles together.

R U Ok?

On Thursday 8th September, Clyde Primary School celebrated R U OK? Day.  All classes participated in activities to help understand what R U OK?  Day means and strategies to help someone when feeling sad.  The students learnt how to have a conversation with someone when they notice they are sad, frustrated, angry or just not themselves.  It’s important that we try to help them and ask “Are You OK?”

R U OK? Day is a welcome reminder to check in on those we are closest to.  We can never 'make' someone open up however, these words may just be the beginning of an important conversation.  So perhaps give a friend a call that you haven’t spoken to in a while or even visit for a cuppa. Who knows?  It may just be what is needed.

Footy Day Parade

Thank you to everyone who attended our Footy Parade today.  It was wonderful to see so many students and their families in our new gymnasium again.  Please see the Footy Day page for photographs.

Art Walk

Students across the school had the opportunity to present their canvas art work this week and were able to visit all the classrooms around the school and provide a review.  Thank you to all the families who also took the opportunity to come and see our student’s wonderful pieces of art.  Please see  the Art Walk page for photographs.

Colouring Competition

I would like to congratulate Zyuri 6A, Dhiya 5A, Lerah 4B, Ekam 3A, Levi 2D, Anna 1A and Elijah FA, the winners of our Colouring competition.  Thank you Ms Steckyj and Presley (Our Year 6 Arts Leader) for your hard work in setting up the competition and the Art Walk.

Welcome to our new staff

Hi, I am Vindy Gunasekera, the new Music teacher at Clyde Primary School.  It is a pleasure for me to share my passion for music and to get to know all the students from Foundation to Year 6, their thoughts, ideas and skills about music during the last few weeks.

I gained my Post graduate Diploma in Teaching from the Latrobe University, Victoria and since then have been teaching in Private, Public and Catholic schools in the South Eastern suburbs over 14 years.  I studied music from a very early age and have qualifications in Music from Trinity College of London.

Prior to Teaching, I worked as an architect in Sri Lanka and in New Zealand.  I am looking forward to providing students with authentic learning experiences supporting them to develop a passion for music and learn and grow in a fun and meaningful environment.

Dear Families of Clyde Primary School,

My name is Rachel Costello and I have just recently joined the wonderful staff of Clyde Primary School.

I have been teaching in primary schools for over 20 years here in Melbourne and the Gold Coast…which is my home town.

I am very excited to be a part of the Clyde Primary School staff and community, and look forward to getting to know all the students and their families over the next term of 2022.

I’d like to introduce myself I’m Andrew and I am new to our wonderful school this term.  I’m looking after our Buildings and Grounds Maintenance you may have seen me around the school getting balls out of the trees on the oval to moving furniture and many other varied tasks as required

My background is in security systems and phone Installation and maintenance.  I was a volunteer in the local CFA for many years which involved attending training, meetings and plenty of trips away fighting fires and many other call outs around the state and locally.

I have 3 children who are all grown up now and I enjoy the outdoors tinkering around the garden, there’s always something to do repair/build.

My four-legged friend Broadie the beagle keeps me on my toes he is high maintenance on the weekend we attend outings with the Beagle Club of Victoria.

2022 NAPLAN Results

The results for students in Year 3 and Year 5 who undertook NAPLAN this year were published on the 31st August. Families received individual results on Monday 5th September. Initial analysis of the results show particular growth in spelling which indicates that the 2 new spelling programs introduced last year have made a significantly positive impact.  Year 5 data on the number of students achieving the top two bands has grown.  This is our current focus and two targets set during the review last term have been achieved this year.  Unfortunately due to NAPLAN being cancelled in 2020 due to COVID there is no benchmark growth data to compare other targets.

Building Update

Students and staff have begun to settle into the two new buildings.  There are some items that still need to be delivered including dividing screens between classrooms and projectors and some furniture.

Work on Stage 2 of the build has commenced and as part of this stage there will be work undertook on some buildings currently in use and pathways around the buildings.  On Wednesday one portable was moved to a new permanent location.  In order to move the portable two Year 3 classes have been moved temporarily into the gym for the last week of the term.

Work has also begun on the new oval which will hopefully be ready for students to use later on this year.  There is currently limited play space for students during recess and lunch.  To alleviate this students are currently able to use half of the gymnasium at recess and lunch to play basketball.  Up until last week students were also able to use a part of the gym as a colouring room.  Due to the relocation of the Year 3 classes this has been closed however there are plans for it to be reopened in a different location if needed.  The current oval has recently been extended which has provided more space for students.

BYOD Information Night

In Year 5 and 6 students are highly encouraged to have their own laptops at school as this fosters the development of 21st century technology skills.  Through this students are able to access the Victorian Curriculum in a way that develops skills that students can use in Secondary School, when they join the work force and in their own personal lives.

On the 27th October parents of students in Year 4 and Year 5 are invited to participate in a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) Information Session.  This session will provide families with information regarding the program and what type of device is most suitable to bring to school.  More information will be sent out regarding this session next term.
