Year Two News

Written by the Year Two Team

Hello Year Two Families,

Welcome back to Term Four. The students are back in their routines and have been exposed to lots of exciting learning.

In Reading, we have been working on predictions by writing what students think will happen before, during and after a text. They were also encouraged to ask questions about the text to gain a deeper understanding and explore character traits in order to prepare students when writing their own narratives. Students have enjoyed being exposed to different fables and particularly enjoyed Little Red Riding Hood.

In Writing, we have been working on Narratives, and have explored texts by focusing on the Orientation, Rising Action, Climax, Falling action and Resolution. Children have also been marking themselves on a rubric to give them the opportunity to take ownership of their learning by celebrating what they have done well and identifying areas of improvement.

In Numeracy, students have been working on Fractions. The Year Two’s have been exposed to multiple lessons including number lines, equivalent fractions, understanding halves, quarters, eighths and much more. Students have been working in groups in their classroom to find fractions in real life, learning about the numerator and denominator and using class resources such as counters to create fractions. We have also continued fluid groups two sessions a week which has been great for differentiation between classrooms and students being able to target their level of learning.

In Inquiry, we have unpacked our sixth and final unit for the year ‘How We Express Ourselves’ with the central idea ‘People express important events through celebrations and traditions.’

We have started the unit with a provocation day where the students were able to rotate between classrooms and see different celebrations around the world.

Each classroom had their own celebrations, which were:

Birthdays

Lunar New Year

Christmas

Easter

Diwali

The students have made further wonderings about their new unit and unpacked the central idea. The Year Two team have been very excited to unpack this unit further and learn more about the traditions and celebrations.

Christmas Carols

Most classes have now been paired up with another class to perform Christmas carols for end of the year. Most classes have now decided on a song which will be announced to your class by your teacher. The Year Two team are very excited to start practising, rehearsing and performing their carol dance.
