PDHPE Update
What a busy start to the year in PDHPE!
Firstly, and probably the most exciting news, is the opening of the MAG Fitness Centre! Many of our students across Years 7-12 have completed their inductions and are making great use of the space, increasing their knowledge of the machines during lunch times and afterschool. It has been great to see the students aiming to improve their health and fitness and we encourage all students to come along and check it out!
Wider Reading Program
As a child, did most of your reading occur at home, or in a school? Did you read books that were prescribed texts or books that piqued your interest?
Over the Easter Holidays, students from year 7-12 participated in a wider reading program. Each student selected a novel from a range of genres and across a variety of topics. Students journeyed from war torn Spain to the dystopian Australian future.
By engaging in extended reading programs our students build a range of valuable language skills, not only gaining reading and writing competence but achieving vocabulary growth and learning autonomy.
This week students are concluding their holiday reading program by identifying what insight their texts provide about the human experience.
What is your child reading at school this term?
Year 7 – ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness
Year 8 – ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by William Shakespeare
Year 9 – ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck
Year 10 – ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare

Year 11 - Standard – ‘The Circle’ (film study)

Year 10 Entrepreneurship Challenge
Recently the Year 10 Commerce students showed off their entrepreneurial skills by participating in an Entrepreneurship challenge. Working in teams, students were tasked with developing an innovative new product idea to address one of the sustainable development goals which they promoted in a trade exhibition. Students did an excellent job of creating and promoting products to address world issues that were important to them such as world hunger, gender equality, water management and environmental protection.
HSC Biology Investigation
At the end of Term 1, students studying HSC Biology consolidated their understanding of the Module 'Genetic Change' by conducting an investigation to compare DNA sequences of individuals for sickle cell anaemia.
To do this, students used gel electrophoresis to create a DNA profile of the samples provided. DNA profiling is used to establish relationships between familial relationships between individuals, forensic investigation and analyse evolutionary relationships. This is the first time students at Moama Anglican Grammar have had the opportunity to complete such an investigation and practise real life laboratory techniques involved in genetics. This activity also sought to connect the Module key ideas and encourage critical thinking and problem solving skills through DNA analysis. Students were able to make connections between genotype and phenotype and changes in the DNA and amino acid sequence related to human disease.
Sporting Achievements
This week Dylan Jardine played his first senior game for the Moama Magpies against Rumbalara. After three solid games in the Under 17's Dylan's performance caught the eye of the senior coaching staff. Dylan was named as the substitute but after half time was injected into the game as a defensive wingman. After playing a 'run-with' role against his opponent and numerous possessions of his own, Senior Coach Luke Eldridge acknowledged Dylan's performance, "Dylan showed today that he could match it with the senior players. He did what was asked of him and got plenty of touches including some pressure acts in the last quarter which resulted in scoring shots for Moama. He's a great young man with so much upside and quality values".
Well done, Dylan!
