Junior School Learning

Reading in Foundation

Students have commenced a structured phonemic awareness program called Heggerty as their warm up to each reading session. During this time students practice rhyming and onset fluency as well as isolating, blending and segmenting sounds.  We have also been developing our reading comprehension by learning about the beginning, middle and ending of a story using a rich vocabulary mentor text.

Year 1 and 2

Tex

Reading

We were learning about phonemes and how to spell words. We learned about phonemes ‘ a sound’ and graphemes ‘a spelling choice’.

Writing

We wrote a recount that started with ‘On the holidays’. I wrote about watching the Cats and playing footy at half time. It was the best day of my life.

Maths

We had to ask questions and then we learned about graphs. I asked ‘What is your favourite sport?’ The most popular sport was soccer.

Henry

Reading

We were learning about phonemes. A phoneme is a speech sound. My favourite speech sound is h for Henry and hamburger.

Writing

We were learning about recounts. I wrote about our garage sale and towing the car we sold. I want to tow a car again.

Maths

We were learning about explaining data by collecting it then displaying it by drawing a picture or column graph. I collected data on ‘What was your favourite ice cream?’ The most popular was chocolate and mint.

Reading

We looked at the sound chart. We looked at speech sounds and spelling choices. It was fun.

Writing

We learned about recounts. My recount was about going to the footy. It was my first football game and it was entertaining when the kids came out.

Maths

In maths we did warm-ups and said facts about numbers, like if it was a 2 or 3 digit number, it’s place value and if it was an odd or even number. We also made data and we made it into a picture graph.
