Principal's Message

Good afternoon Parents and Carers,

As many of our families may already be aware, this year Catholic Education is celebrating 200 years of leading education in Australia.  On Monday 24th May, Mrs Mary Davison and I will travel to Armidale with our Year 10 School Captains and Prefects to join all the other schools in our diocese celebrate this incredible milestone by attending a special mass at the Sts Mary & Joseph Cathedral.  Along with celebrating 200 years of educating Australian students, this mass will also mark the commencement of Catholic Schools Week in our diocese.

I would like to acknowledge the extraordinary pastoral efforts of one of our year five students, Caleb Fleming, during the Diocesan Cross Country event on Friday 7th May.  Despite running an excellent race, Caleb stopped to help and support a student from another school who was having difficulty breathing, until medical support arrived.  Once the support arrived, Caleb continued his race finishing approximately 10th (only the top six runners qualify for the next round).  We have since been advised that due to Caleb's selfless act of kindness (and race position at the time of the incident), he has been offered a place at the next stage. Congratulations Caleb, a wonderful ambassador of the spirit of St Philomena's Catholic School!

Yesterday, Wednesday 19th May, our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students completed their final NAPLAN assessment that has been conducted over the past 2 weeks.  Thank you to the many staff that supervised this process.  Congratulations to all our students for their efforts and enthusiasm throughout. Well done to all!

Finally, I would like to thank the P&F for their contributions at the recent Moree on a Plate event.  This year, as in previous years, the P&F ran a food stall in the kids corner, providing hungry patrons with hot chips, popcorn, cold drinks and fairy floss.  Thank you to all the helpers that gave their time to support this fundraising event.  A special thank you to one of our Year 9 students, Harry Hurle, for his contributions on the day, cooking over 20kgs of hot chips.  Thank you for your support Harry.

Next week, as part of Catholic Schools Week, we will be adding additional posts to our Facebook page, promoting what learning looks, feels and sounds like in our wonderful school.  We encourage all our parents to follow our page and 'like' the posts.

Have a wonderful week.

God bless

Jamie McDowall
