'The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.'
John 10:27-30
The Good Shepherd
We often hear Jesus take the title of 'The Good Shepherd' changing the view and reputation shepherds retained in the day of Christ. Shepherds of the first century didn't have a particularly good reputation as the hired help tending to the sheep, as they were regarded as untrustworthy and often accused of illicitly selling off the sheep's milk and even the occasional lamb.
Despite this harsh picture of shepherds, Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd
which with one word, He acknowledges the reputation of shepherds but at the same time, completely dismisses it by describing Himself as a shepherd too. The Good Shepherd! He chose himself to be described as one of the worst occupations but in doing so, raised the status to unassailable heights.
As the Good Shepherd, Jesus tends to His flock, guiding us and protecting us if we choose to listen and follow. Following Him to greener pastures to carry on His mission in the way we speak and act. Through these actions, we can be better nurtured and grow.
