GHPS Life

HAPPY FAMILIES - by Dr Justin Coulson

The central premise underlying both punishment and reward is control. And control is bad for kids.

What’s a parent got left to get kids to do as they’re told if not through rewards and punishments?

High quality parenting consists of three key things.

Involvement: The best parents are involved in their children’s lives. It’s not so much about surveillance as it is awareness of where their children are and what they’re doing, along with support in times of need.

Structure: The best parents provide structures and safety for their children. This involves talking with them about challenges they may face and working with them on solutions for keeping them safe.

Autonomy Support: The best parents offer support for their children to make their own decisions (in a developmentally appropriate way) so that they are not forever reliant on the grown-ups to dictate their every choice.

Still stuck? If you’re free on May 16th, join me to hear more about how you can actually implement these three important strategies here - https://www.happyfamilies.com.au/shop/product/carrots-sticks

COMMUNITY SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS

If your child achieves something special (grand final win, most valuable player award, best and fairest etc.), please email me (jordan.daley@education.vic.gov.au) through photos and an overview of the achievement to post in the newsletter. It is important to celebrate and recognise such successes with the school community.

REBEL COMMUNITY KICKBACKS PROGRAM

SPECIALIST SUBJECT CONTINUOUS REPORTING PIECE

Via Seesaw, your children will receive one continuous reporting assessment piece from each of their specialist teachers, at regular intervals, throughout the year. This assessment will generally be uploaded in the form of a photograph or video.

In order to make the process achievable in the time available, and to present you with a more genuine representation of the activity, performance or sports game/skill, it is likely that the majority of the digital images or videos will involve a small group of students.

If you do not wish your child to be photographed or filmed in a small group of students, please indicate this preference by either printing & returning the ‘non-permission’ slip attached HERE, or by emailing myself at andrea.williams@education.vic.gov.auby Wednesday 18th May

If you do not have any issues with them being photographed or filmed in a group, please do not respond.

The specialist teachers look forward to providing you with feedback about how your child is progressing in their specialist subjects.

Kind Regards

Andrea Williams
