Model UN

Monash University - Model UN

On Wednesday May 18th 2022, a team from Mornington Secondary College went to Monash University to participate in the Model UN.

The students presented an amazing opening resolution on behalf of Sweden to the Honourable Secretary General for the day and they were outstanding with all students contributing to the resolution statement.

Our students bravely were the first country to challenge other countries. They provided a sense of authenticity by welcoming everyone in Swedish to set the scene for the day. Even when distracted by a fire evacuation, our students kept with their rigorous negotiations and prepared questions, created allegiances and demonstrated critical thinking throughout the event.

Students also had the opportunity to be shown through the Moot Court and were able to listen to academics and students talk about the court and law pathways for future studies.

We were so proud of our students.

Following is a report from one of the participants.

Monash University - Model UN

The Monash Law School Model United Nations Conference was a fantastic experience that I am very grateful to have been a part of.

Representing The Kingdom of Sweden, the team and I got to learn vast amounts regarding Sweden’s role and influence in the international community.  After presenting our opening pieces our team was the first to speak and clarify our statement and goals regarding refugees and asylum seekers.

The objective of the day was to create a resolution – a preamble and a list of amendments were provided, and all member nations had the opportunity to provide their opinions and eventually put forward new amendments, remove amendments or make alterations.

I am very proud to say our team was immensely successful in changing amendment 2.5 from “condemns mandatory detention” to “demands the abolition of mandatory detention”.

This change was very hard to convince the delegates from Australia and the United States of America to agree to however we were able to convince a majority of the nations to side with us.

Overall, the day was a great experience and furthered my interest in politics, law and international relations.
