Head Start Program

Head Start Program

Head Start is a Department of Education program available to all Mornington Secondary College Senior School students.

Head Start offers students from Years 10 to 12 an opportunity to engage in learning and employment simultaneously.

Students take what they learn in areas such as their VET course and extend it into paid part time employment.

As a Coordinator my work is to support students who have clear career goals, demonstrate maturity and commitment, and have a passion to get a “head start” in their chosen career!

Charlie Bell (Year 11 VCE) and Archer Hornsby (Year 11 VCAL) are now fully fledged Head Start students. They combine their apprenticeship employment in Certificate III in Carpentry, as well as their Year 11 school curriculum.

Charlie Bell is the first MSC VCE student to combine his VCE studies with part time VET studies.  His apprenticeship in Certificate III in Carpentry results in him balancing the demands of part time work and training while still attending school three days per week.  We extend our thanks Mr Howgate (Year 11 Team Leader) for his support and assistance in putting together Charlie’s complex VCE timetable.

Archer has always identified as a practical learner and completed a Certificate II in Horticulture in 2021 alongside his school studies. Undertaking VCAL in Year 11 was a natural progression for this applied learner, and his carpentry apprenticeship was easily accommodated within his VCAL Year 11 school program.

Both students are employed by Mornington Peninsula based companies who are committed to giving our young people an opportunity to succeed.

We wish Charlie and Archer every success in their apprenticeships and look forward to regular updates on their progress.
