From the Principal

In the spirit of reconciliation Mornington Secondary College acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

Life at school has been extremely busy. We have visited Benton’s Junior College, Mornington Primary school, and Osborne Primary with our travelling roadshow. Students from our school have performed for the primary school students within the Drum Corps. They have sung Mumma Mia songs from our upcoming school production. The Aerobics teams have performed their routines that won at the regional finals and students have spoken about their experiences at Mornington Secondary College.

We have thoroughly enjoyed visiting the schools, particularly with past students as their relationships with students and staff are still strong.

NAPLAN for our Yr 7 and 9 students is now complete with results scheduled for late August, whilst the Attitudes to School Survey is nearing completion. Students in CONNECT will be discussing the results of the surveys and student forums will be facilitated by our College Captains to discuss the findings. The captains will then present these findings to teachers at a staff meeting. This is an example of student voice and agency.

There have been many hours of work in preparation of the senior school reforms.

‘Victoria is moving to a new integrated senior secondary certificate in 2023, which will be fully integrated by 2025. This will bring together the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) certificates. These reforms will ensure every student has the skills they need to find rewarding careers and reach their full potential.

The first stage is the introduction of a new VCE Vocational Major commencing in 2023. This is a two-year vocational and applied learning program that will replace Senior and Intermediate VCAL and offer a program that enables successful transitions into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training, or directly into employment

The certificate reforms are part of a suite of 38 recommendations from the review into vocational and applied learning pathways for senior secondary students (the Firth Review), led by former VCAA Chief Executive Officer, John Firth.

The Firth Review found that we need to do more to make vocational and applied learning in schools consistently high quality, relevant to the needs of students and employers, and accessible to all students across the state. Key recommendations were to create a new vocational and applied learning pathway within the VCE and a new foundation certificate.’

I am aware students and parents are beginning to ask questions about ‘what does this mean?’

A community presentation evening has been scheduled 19th July at the College. Please add this date to your calendar to find out more information.
