Textiles

Textile students from Years 10 – 12 were given the opportunity to attend the Gabrielle Chanel exhibition at the NGV over the holidays. Student’s that attended the exhibition were excited to see iconic outfits that have remained current even today, as well as to learn the reason and purpose to why Chanel designed garments in a certain way. It was also great to see friends and family joining in on the excursion.

Friday 13th May, Year 11 and 12 students were lucky to listen to the head creator and designer of childrenswear label ‘Yeah Life’. David Jonsson gave the students a great deal of insight into the textile industry by discussing his previous employment with brands such as Billabong and Von Zipper that lead him to build his own brand. He described the importance of Sustainability within the Textile industry, and how certain materials used in the ‘Yeah Life’ garments are more beneficial for the environment through their characteristics and properties. This will be extremely beneficial for students leading into their exams.

On Thursday 6th May, Parkdale Secondary College, along with Patterson River and Mordialloc Secondary College (Kingston Koorie mob) came together to participate in an excursion to the St. Kilda Football Club (Danny Frawley building). One of the activities students had the choice of participating in was the opportunity to create a possum skin pelt that reflects their families mob, or a totem that is specific to them. Students first designed their symbols before burning them onto individual pelts. These pelts will then be sewn together to create a Possum Skin Cloak that will represent connection within our communities.
