Japanese

It’s hard to believe that Term 4 is almost over and so is the Japanese journey for many of our students.

YEAR 8

Year 8 Japanese students began a new unit this term, exploring Storytelling. This has involved students learning vocabulary around the key characters found in traditional Japanese fairy tales and exploring the common themes that are found throughout each. Students have compared these with fairy tales from European cultures. During the next few weeks we will make further comparisons with more modern day Japanese stories, looking at popular Anime.

As a cultural focus for the term, students have been introduced to the Japanese art of “Sashiko”, which is a traditional form of embroidery. Each student has chosen a canvas bag with a unique pattern to sew. Students have embraced this activity and seem to be enjoying the calming nature of sashiko. We are looking forward to seeing the final product!

YEAR 10

Year 10 Japanese students created and starred in their own version of a Japanese weather report to finish off their assessments for the year. With such enthusiasm for the Asian music scene among students,, the class is now busy creating their very own J-pop song.  This includes developing a J-pop group with detailed descriptions of their individual character, and background to the group's formation. After a great team effort, the song lyrics are almost complete and dance rehearsals are due to begin this week!  If time permits, a video clip may also ensue!
