PERFORMING ARTS

In Drama this term the Prep students are working on changing their voice and actions according to prompts. We used fairytale character stereotypes (witch, zombie etc) to help make these choices and changes easier to do and observe. We pretend to make sandwiches, walk a dog, or paint a picture while being different characters or feeling different emotions, such as "brush your teeth like an angry fairy" or sweep the floor like a curious witch".

In Grade 1 and 2 we're beginning our journey into improvisation games. We're practising getting random ideas quickly from a prompt and combining these ideas into Silly Sentences that we act out. We might have three blue dogs flying a plane while eating lollies, or a king's passport getting stuck in a tree. These silly sentences help us to act without judging whether our ideas or choices are "good" before we use them. Getting used to giving and accepting ideas without self-consciousness is an important step in feeling free to act in front of others.

The Grade 3 and 4 students are exploring scripts and plays. We're learning what makes a script and how to use them. We'll branch into turning scripts into action, blocking, acting choices and using props or sets. The Grade 5s and 6s are learning choreography for the graduation in a few weeks time. We're up for the challenge!
