Vocational Education and Training - Certificate II Building and Construction

First year students have been busy learning the base knowledge required to be a skilled trades-person. The units that they have been undertaking include topics such as Communication, Work Preparation, Plans and Drawings, Measurements and Calculations, Basic levelling, Tools and Equipment.

Once the students have completed their theory assessments, they put their knowledge into practice by completing a project of their own design, which they will continue until they gain competency. Students also undertook an externally provided First Aid and CPR training course that they enjoyed, gaining the required certificates for working on a construction site.

Second-year students are undertaking a different set of units of the course. They are covering Setting Out Buildings, Sub-Floors, Wall Framing, Roofing, External Cladding, Windows and Doors. They have finished the theory component and are undertaking the major practical assessment, which will consist of constructing a five meter by four meter house at the Cranbourne Campus.

The group have excelled in designing, drawing, planning and starting to construct the house; they are thoroughly enjoying the project. At this stage, they have completed all the set-out workings and have nearly finished the sub flooring. Once built, the house will be also used by the students undertaking the Certificate II in Electrotechnology to give them the opportunity to do a full onsite electrical rough in.
