Year 3 - Year 6

Assistant Principal's Report

Year 3 - Year 6 News

It certainly has not been a warm start to the term in regards to the weather, however, the learning here at Pakenham Springs has really stepped up.  Students have returned from the holidays ready to learn and every classroom across the Year 3-6 area feels calm and orderly.

It is evident from this fortnight alone,  that our teachers used their planning days well to ensure high levels of learning that is catering to our students' individual needs.

In Year 3 Reading, students are learning about the difference between fact and opinions.  This is often a difficult skill for our Year Three students to master.  I have enjoyed participating in the many games and activities that each class is engaged in to assist students to make this clear distinction.

In Year 4, the students have been learning about an author's purpose and main idea.   In Week 4, students will use these strategies to support them in making predictions.

In Year 5 book club, students are really enjoying the focus of locating literal information.  Facts and opinions are again focusing on finding the main idea in texts.

In Year 6, students are studying 'plagiarism' which undoubtedly is important to understand and an important skill to have, especially with the nonfiction focus in the current learning.  Identifying the most important information and then being able to reword this in their own words.  Exploring plagiarism now will be very beneficial in secondary school, with much of the learning focusing on non-fiction text types.

In Numeracy, across the year levels, you will see students learning about multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.   Remember to take advantage of the online maths learning we have here at Pakenham Springs as it has been programmed by your child's teacher at their level of need.

We hope everyone has a great fortnight and look forward to checking in next fortnight.

Kind Regards

Jane King and Renee Cotterell
