Gardening

Term 2 in the Garden

Term 2 is upon us and so is the colder weather - this means it is time to plant out brassicas, silverbeet, spinach and broad beans. We’ve had a bumper crop of Jerusalem artichokes this season that Kitchen students will have a great time cooking within the coming weeks. This Term in Garden class, Foundation – 2 students will be busy learning how plants grow and what actions like mulching, watering, fertilising and weeding does to help a garden thrive.

Garden Volunteers

Garden classes need your help! Volunteers are needed to help with Garden class activities and the more volunteers we have, the more activities we can run for students. The great thing about gardening is that we are all learning together, this means that you don’t need any gardening skills to help out. If you do have something to share, we would love to learn from you too!

Are you wanting to get involved in our school’s SAKG program but can’t make it to a Kitchen or Garden class? Every Wednesday afternoon from 2:50pm I welcome parents and carers to join me in the garden for some maintenance and gardening tasks. So far we have given our Labyrinth Garden a makeover, netted fruit trees and maintained the indigenous garden, all of which I couldn’t have done without your help.

Please note: all volunteers need a working with children check and an OH&S induction which is done via the office.

Mini Market

Our Monty Mini Market will be running every Thursday in Term 2. Students will be selling excess produce from our garden as well as seedlings planted by students and goodies made by our kitchen classes. All money raised goes right back into supporting Monty’s SAKG program – we hope to see you there!
