Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

Term 1

Our Grade 3 and 4 students started their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program last Wednesday and each week will be working in the garden or the kitchen.

IN THE GARDEN

Worm farms

Last week each Grade 3 and 4 class set up their own Worm "Cafe".  After much discussion about 'worm wee' and 'worm poo' (with much hilarity) students went on to construct the worm farm, prepare the bedding mix, add 1000 worms, having a close examination of worms (including exclamations that worms bite),  and then covered the worms with a worm blanket.  Each class will work to maintain these farms through their work in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.

IN THE KITCHEN

Orientation and a tasting

All Grade 3 and 4 students made it into the kitchen for the first time last week and spent some time orientating themselves, labelling items and then a sensational tasting session.  Students tried some foods for the very first time and some even enjoyed it!  One of the aims of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden is to develop an understanding and appreciation for the cycle of growing, harvesting, transporting, cooking, eating and recycling our own food.  We have had a very positive start last week.
