Performing at Valedictory Evening

Tony Churilov, Year 12

Last Thursday, the Kilvington Stage Band had the pleasure of performing at the Class of 2020 Valedictory Evening. With the attendees of the students and parents of the Class of 2020, we played a number of pieces from our repertoire, including Burritos to Go and The Jazz Police

It was great to see everyone together and enjoying music in the same space for the first time in over a year, and what a fitting farewell to last year’s Year 12 cohort. Congratulations to everyone who took part!

Student achievement

Samuel Kan from ELC performed on violin at his first soiree. The first four pieces performed were by memory from his Suzuki Book 1. This is the first time an ELC student has performed Suzuki Violin at a soiree at Kilvington.

Watch Samuel's performance here. Well done Samuel!

International Women’s Day

Asteria Chen, Year 11

I was glad to play Prelude for a Pensive Pupil at Kilvington's International Women’s Day Breakfast. Composed by Australian woman composer Peggy Glanville Hicks, it was a fantastic opportunity to promote female power by performing in front of an audience in Dalton Hall.

Playing piano at the beginning of the event was a new challenge for me, and one that echoed the theme of International Women’s Day 'Choose to Challenge'This experience encourages me to attend more performances at School.

Performer’s Lounge

Zachary Ma from Year 1 would love to show everyone his amazing performance of the Busybody, an AMEB Grade 1 piece.

Watch Zachary perform on Youtube! Well done Zachary Ma!

Instrumental music staff

In each edition of In the Know this year, we will be introducing you to one of our music teachers. This edition, we welcome Mr Steve Falk, Percussion/Drum teacher.

BACKGROUND

Steve Falk, Percussion/Drum teacher

Apart from teaching at Kilvington, I also teach at the University of Melbourne and Monash University. I have performed with the Melbourne, Queensland and Tasmanian symphony orchestras, and am currently busy playing for the Australian Opera and Ballet with Orchestra Victoria.

I’ve worked for over 20 professional musicals including The Lion King, Mamma Mia! and We Will Rock You, and a highlight was travelling to Japan, India, China and New Zealand as the Musical Director for the Australian tap dance show Tap Dogs. I have also appeared in backing bands for many solo artists including John Farnham and Tina Arena. I also love to compose music ((which is published by AMEB, Edition Svitzer (Denmark) and Alfonce Production (France)).

Percussion students at Kilvington are kept very busy providing a steady beat for the School orchestra, two concert bands, and a stage band. We also have an excellent percussion ensemble, and our rehearsals are guaranteed to be a lot of fun. If you think drums and percussion might be something your child would like to try, please consider signing them up for lessons.
