Building Fluent Recall of Facts

Throughout their primary schooling, students develop a number of strategies and skills that support them to be mathematical problem solvers. One of the key skills students develop is their fluent recall of multiplication and division facts to 10x10 (also known as ‘times tables’). This begins at the start of a student's schooling when they develop their understanding of equal groups and sorting, then move through to learning about arrays, skip counting, recognising the multiplication/division relationship, and then to the fluent recall of multiplication and division facts to 10x10. At school, to support the development of these skills, students engage in daily fluency and reviews, multiplication by heart practice, and explicit teaching of written strategies.

The key to developing fluent recall of these facts is to ensure students have an opportunity to engage in daily practice, both at school and at home. This supports them to move the facts from their working memory to their long-term memory.

What you can do at home

Each week, teachers are adding number fluency activities to our home learning portal. These activities are the same as the ones students are engaged in at school. Teachers are also offering hard copy packs for students to take home and practise a focus fact. This repeated practice supports students to embed their understanding both at school and home. Click below to see what activities you can do at home or contact your classroom teacher for a hard copy take-home pack.
