REC News

Dear Parents and Carers,

Over the next two weeks, we will be celebrating two very important events in the Catholic Church.

On Tuesday, 8th August, we celebrate the Feast of Mary MacKillop. This feast day is a special day for our school, as we were founded by the Josephite sisters. During our Religious Education lessons, we will be learning about the life of Mary MacKillop and her role in founding the Sisters of St. Joseph. As part of our celebration, we invite families to attend Mass with us at 2 pm. After our Mass, we will enjoy a small treat at school to commemorate the day.

Tuesday, 15th August, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the day Mother Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul after she died. This story is not found in the Bible. However, it is a tradition that has been handed down from the earliest days of the Church. The tradition says that Mary died in Jerusalem and was buried in a tomb, but when the apostles opened the tomb, her body was gone. It is believed that Mary was assumed into heaven because she was chosen by God and said ‘yes’ to becoming the mother of Jesus.
