5 and 6 Landcare
By Chelsea, Estee and Martha
The 5 and 6 students went over to Middle Gully to participate in some First Nations activities at landcare. It was run by Bram Mason and Cheryl Taylor, Bree’s parents. We were split into two groups, half went up to the fire and the other half went into the eco shed to do some weaving.
At the fire Bram told us about bush tucker. Mr B and Mr Ewels were also helping. We were given some seeds and a mortar and pestle. We grinded the seeds into flour while the adults cooked the Johnny Cake ( damper) on the fire. After we finished the Johnny Cakes we got handed some native popcorn with bush salt and pepperberry.
Meanwhile the other kids and Cheryl in the eco shed were weaving little baskets with coloured raffia and brown raffia. Lots of helpers including the following, Miss Pitt, Mrs Swale, Miss T and Penny Ball were also helping the kids. We were taught the method of weaving baskets with a needle. All the children enjoyed the session.
A big thanks to the teachers and parents for making this day possible.
The sessions are after lunch (from 2:00pm) until 3:30pm. As always, if any parents would like to come along to help you are more than welcome.
