SPOTLIGHT

Spotlight on Year Two

We are very proud of the learning that has taken place in Year 2. We have had a lot of fun creating, playing, writing and discovering in all Key Learning Areas.

In Literacy we are using new vocabulary such as 'sensational', 'admiring' and 'towering' in our sentences to uplevel our language and make it more engaging for the reader.

In Mathematics, we are currently learning about how to tell the time and work out the length of time between events. Big clocks, small clocks, analogue clocks and digital clocks have enabled us to explore real-life scenarios of being on time. The games we have been playing are proving to be lots of fun when learning about Whole Number this term. We have been using lots of hands-on equipment with a buddy which is facilitating lots of great mathematical talk amongst our students.

In Religion Year 2 behaved beautifully during our Ash Wednesday Liturgy where they received the ashes on their foreheads.

We Are Learning To (WALT) explore movement that can apply to many fun games during Sport. Teamwork is a key focus in Year 2 and we are focusing on what it looks like, which  is using encouraging words and everyone having another go.

We know that you would be very proud of our mature learning. We have created some artworks related to the text 'Willy the Wimp' by Anthony Browne. These are our own sketches that we have then brightly coloured. Take a look at some pictures below of all the wonderful things Year 2 have been doing in class.

Year 4's Spotlight

This week's report was written by our Year 4 students.

Year 4  Religion  by  Bailey, Eloise and Archie

At the start of the year, we went to the Beginning of Year Mass and Ash Wednesday Mass. Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent which is when we get ready for Easter. Our first unit for Year Four is the Ten Commandments. We have been learning about the rules God gave to Moses while he was in the desert. We have also been thinking about the rules for Year Four:

  • We are safe.
  • We are learners and
  • We are valued, respected and cared for.

Fantastic Mr Fox by Sophia, Alexis and Fletcher

We have been reading 'Fantastic Mr Fox' in class. We have been focusing on Farmer Bunce, Farmer  Boggis and Farmer Bean and the perspective of the farmers versus foxes. We then looked at Mr Fox and Mrs Fox and discussed the descriptive language used in the book. In Visual Literacy, we experimented with different visual techniques and created our own book covers.

Science by Izzy, Kate and  Evita

In Science, we are learning about food and fibre.

We have looked at dairy farms and how they produce dairy products. We made butter by shaking cream in a jar for about 20-25 minutes. We have learned how the dairy cow produces milk that turns into a cream which then goes to the shop. Then we took it from the shops and turned it into yummy creamy butter to spread on our bread. We made mouthwatering fairy bread using our butter.

We have also planted seeds and have been watching our seeds grow throughout these past couple of weeks. They have transformed from tiny little seeds to big strong sprouts. We have also learned along this journey about the life cycle of plants. Now we will take our lovely little sprouts home and plant them as we watch them grow even more. After they fully grow we will take them and enjoy them as a delicious crunchy munchy snack.

Sport by Jacob, Eddie and Benjamin

We have been busy doing many different sports.

Hockey: We have been learning how to use the hockey sticks correctly and how to be safe with the hockey balls. We have also been learning to strike the balls properly and having fun with relays.

Oztag: We have been learning how to tag the opponent, passing backwards to your teammates and sharing the ball around. We had fun playing with our classmates.

Soon each class will have two lessons each with Jay Stone, practising athletics skills.

MaST update...

One of the components of the Mathematics Improvement Program we’ve been implementing at St Nicholas this year is called ‘the Hook’. This is a part of the Great Maths Learning Sequence that grabs student's attention and promotes their interest in the topic and language of the unit.

Year 1 have been visited by a very confused teacher who didn’t know what month it was, and the Number Fairy, who has been causing all sorts of mischief in the classrooms this week.

Year 2 had a real world problem presented to them, how do we know when to send a birthday card to our dearly beloved Mum? What things do I need to know to get it there at the right time?

Keep an eye out for more exciting Hooks as we travel further on our MaST journey.
