Health and Physical Education

We welcome all students back to the college for an exciting and fulfilling year at John XXIII College. In the Health and Physical Education department, students have been busy settling in and preparing for all lessons.

Currently in Australia, not all students have access to Water Safety Education. We place high importance on our Aquatics units to help prevent drownings and improve confidence and safety around water.

All Year 7 and 8 students have commenced their Aquatics units in Physical Education classes. Year 9 students will be spending the first 7 weeks on a Lifesaving unit and all Year 10 students will try their hand at Water Polo.

Not only do our Physical Education classes aim to improve skills and techniques in the water, however, the timing of these units best prepares our students for our upcoming College Sr Mary Murray Swimming Carnival and later in the term, our ACC Swimming Carnival. This year our College Swimming Carnival will be held at HBF stadium on February 14, 2020. All students will have the opportunity to represent their House in an event or novelty event with the aim of capturing points for their House.

The PE department would like to take this opportunity to wish all students the very best with their studies and sport this year and look forward to a promising 2020 for all.

2019 Study Tour to France

Just before the summer holidays, on the 4 December 2019 a very excited group of French students left for France accompanied by three teachers, Mme Lucas, Ms Murphy and Ms Toleman.

The group did not take long to become immersed into the French language and way of life, attending school and sharing daily experiences with French families. Participants in the Study Tour were able to experience the richness of French history and architecture.  They spent close to two weeks in Marseille, where they visited various historical sites such as the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the la Garde and the Church of St Victor, which dates back to early Church history. Many were impressed by the Palais des Papes in Avignon and its crucial link to the history of the Church. Other visits provided a first-hand experience of the expanse of the Roman Empire and its influence in today’s world.  Students marvelled at the similarities between our new sport’s stadium here in Perth and its Roman counterpart in Mines, the amphitheatre called “les Arènes”.  They were impressed by the size of the Roman Theatre of Orange dating back to the First Century, CE.

Paris offered a more recent perspective of France and its place in the world, through museums, galleries and architecture that can took our breath away.  In addition, the group took a quiet moment to connect with the Jesuit heritage of our school and pray at the Crypte du Martyrium were St Ignatius of Loyola and his companions pronounced their vows of poverty and chastity and promised to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Many thanks to Mme Lucas for co-ordinating and leading the 2019 Study Tour to France and to Ms Murphy and Ms Toleman for their generous support before and during the tour. Merci beaucoup.

We are looking forward to our French students from Marseille visiting John XXIII College on 21 February for three weeks for the 2020 French Exchange. If you would like to support this wonderful exchange program by offering to host a student from France, please write an email to Mme Desa Lucas at your earliest convenience.
