New Equipment for Learning Street and the Hall

We are very excited to share that we have purchased new equipment for Learning Street and the Hall. We are proud to offer our students a range of play spaces during recess and lunch. Each day we open the basketball court and playground at both recess and lunch. We also open quieter play spaces that students can choose to play in such as Learning Street, the Hall and the Library.  Many of our students choose to play in Learning Street and the Hall during recess and lunchtime and we decided that it was time to upgrade the equipment, games and toys that our students use.

In Learning Street students have access to equipment and toys that encourages collaborative, creative and imaginative play. We have purchased new equipment and toys that should enhance the space and foster such play. New toys purchased for Learning Street include; kitchens, shops, dolls, shopping trolleys, plastic food, bbq's, cash registers, doctors kits and dress ups.

In the hall students have access to equipment and toys that encourage designing, building, critical and creative thinking and collaboration.  When you walk into the hall during recess and lunch it is not unusual to see students from Prep to Year 6 working together to build a structure, put together connecting pieces to create a vehicle or newly invented toy, set up a puppet show, play a board game with others or put together a neighborhood that includes train stations, roads, houses and shops.  We have purchased new equipment and games that should improve the Hall. New equipment and games for the Hall include: lego, chess sets, blocks. construction sets, battle ships, Uno and little architects sets.

We thank Mrs. Gerecke for ordering and sorting all the equipment, toys and games. We also thank Barry who will be putting together the kitchens, shops and shelving units in Learning Street. All new equipment will be available for students to use in the nest few weeks.

Staff Training in CPR

On Wednesday evening staff stayed after school to update their level 2 First Aid accreditation.  All staff completed CPR, anaphylaxis and asthma training the ensure that they maintain a current level 2 in First Aid certificate.  At Galilee we are very proud that all staff are trained in First Aid, CPR, anaphylaxis and asthma and this is not the case in all schools.

Staff revised the process for CPR; they learned when they should begin CPR on a patient, the correct technique for CPR and how to use a defibrillator.  Staff learned how to recognize an anaphylatic reaction and how to correctly administer an Epipen.  Staff also learned how to manage an asthma attack and how to administer Ventolin. Staff revised procedures for reading a medical plan and calling an ambulance.

It was an informative session that provided staff with opportunities to practice their skills during role play situations. We thank Pulse First Aid Training for conducting the session with us and Mr. Millar and Mrs. Gerecke for organised for all staff to be trained.

Emergency Management at Galilee

Last Wednesday 8th March, Galilee held a practice 'Lock Down' procedure.  The made-up scenario was that there was a gas leak detected.  The practice alarm was raised at recess and students were asked to assemble in the hall for the lock down.  Students were told it was a practice drill.  Staff who had a class stayed with their class during the practice. Staff who did not have a class assembled in the office and practiced the scenario of checking the gas meter, checking the building and calling for emergency support. The practice was a success and was completed within 12 minutes.  It was wonderful to see that the training that staff have completed in emergency management went to plan during the practice.  Although we hope to never use the training in a real life situation, it is reassuring to know that Galilee staff are very knowledgeable in how to handle any situation that may arise.  We thank Miss Carnovale, our OH&S Leader who organised and coordinated the drill.
