Vinnies Christmas Appeal

Our Christmas Appeal is now underway. Each Pastoral group has been allocated a child that they are responsible for in raising enough money to purchase a Christmas gift. Everyone is encouraged to donate $3.00. Either your Pastoral teacher or a Vinnie will go shopping on your behalf to purchase what could possibly be the only gift these children may receive Christmas morning.

Please ensure all donations are finalised by 21 November so that we can have all gifts purchased in the first week of December. If you have upcoming exams, be sure to donate this week.

Thank you all for your ongoing generosity.

At Nazareth College students have a multitude of opportunities to extend their interests and passions. One of the opportunities that are presented to the students is the participation in the annual Science Talent Search (STS) organised by the Science Teachers Association of Victoria (STAV).

In Year 8, Laurel Science students have the ability to undertake a research project of their choice as part of the curriculum. Students research possible topics that interest them and then concentrate on one of their choices. They spend up to eight weeks working on their project, starting with forming a hypothesis, designing a method including the safety precautions and collecting all the materials needed to carry out their experiments to collect reliable data. Over a number of weeks, they collect the data which either proves or disproves their hypothesis, and then present their findings as a written scientific report. Projects that are unique in their nature and which follow a sound scientific method are submitted to STS.

This year, Annie Shi and Rianah McInnes have won a Minor Bursary for their research titled “Non-Iodising Radiation”.

However, they were not our only winners. STS has a wide assortment of options that our budding scientists can choose from. These include photography, board and computer games, creating a scientific video, a working model or a new invention as well as creative writing. This year, Iliana Nicolaou has won a Minor Bursary for her creative writing piece 'Dear Moon: we’re staying'.

If you feel that you would like to participate in next year’s Science Talent Search or would like to find out more about it, then speak to Miss Gurm or Mrs Murphy about it.

Congratulations to our winners.

Year 10 Food Technology Hospitality Lunch

The Year 10 Food Technology classes planned, cooked and hosted a lunch for their teachers.

Students worked in groups of four and invited two teachers of their choice.

This task involved students planning a two-course menu that suited all dietary needs of guests, ordering all food, preparing and serving the food. The activity was run at lunchtime and involved cooking a main course and dessert. All of the teachers that were attended felt very honoured to be invited and thoroughly enjoyed the lunch.

Congratulations to all the Year 10 students involved.
