Magis

John XXII College performed very creditably at the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions at Yale University and returned last week with all five team members receiving medals,  a total of  seven gold medals and nine silver competing against about 1000 of the best students around the world, representing 60 different countries.  Congratulations to the Junior team of Yvette Rigg, Ann Cullity and Spencer Burchett, and the seniors Bella Pether and Eve Cullity, on representing the College so well.  Yvie Rigg was the outstanding individual performer with seven medals including four gold, and had the distinction of winning a major trophy for third place overall in the debating, an excellent achievement against scholars from all over the world.  The team enjoyed three excellent tour days in between the competition, with two days in New York highlighted by visits to the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, Times Square, Broadway, the top of the Rockefeller Building, and MOMA, whilst the tour of Boston also included visits to the famous Harvard and MIT Universities, which along with Yale meant tours of three of the world’s greatest universities. Special thanks to Ms Kirralee Dawson for her wonderful assistance on the tour.

The Year 7 Personal Project Breakfast saw 20 students exhibiting an amazing range of projects including themes connected with music, art, science, technology, literature, sustainability, dreams, family history and sport. Congratulations to all students on the high quality of the projects, and warmest thanks to the parents and teachers who supported the event. A video of Magis 2019 Program highlights was also shown. Copies of the video are available to students and families.

Last week Year 9 students Bela Boley, Sophie Baron-Hay and Charlotte Moody participated in Brainway’s Quest Competition at UWA , an exciting event which features instruction from university lecturers on the first day and competition on the second. In next week’s newsletter I will be highlighting some excellent opportunities for students going to Years 11 and 12 next year, including two top events during the holidays.

The Magis Chronicle will be available next week in PDF version, whilst the hard cover version will be available for purchase and should arrive early in December. The chronicle includes accounts of all Magis and associated competitions throughout the year, along with colourful pictorials on all special events including breakfasts, camps, gifted and talented programs and tours. Summaries of results for the year will also be included. This 44 page book contains about 100 photos.
