Intermediate Boys Cricket – by Mr Cameron Byrne

Monday 22nd of October the Year 10 boys headed to Waaia for the second round of the Inter-school Cricket after successfully beating Echuca College in Round 1.

The first game was against Kyabram and after losing the toss St Joe's were in the field. A great opening spell by Kale Edwards and Fraser Brooks kept the Kyabram batsman contained. Once the boys were able to get a break through the rest of the Kyabram batters followed suit and were all out for 61.

In reply, Jack Plumridge and Fraser Brooks got St Joe's off to a great start. Angus Martin and Tom Morphett combined to chase down the rest of the runs and St Joe's finished convincing winners by seven wickets.

The final game was against St Mary's, Nathalia, who had a straight qualification into the final after Rochester had to forfeit. After losing the toss, St Joe's were back out in the field on a warm day and St Mary's number 3 and 4 batsmen combined to put on a great partnership.  St Joe's tiring bowlers were made pay for some poor bowling : St Mary's ended up posting 94 in the 17 overs.

St Joe's again started very well, with Fraser Brooks and Angus Martin playing some great shots until Fraser was dismissed LBW. With time running out, Angus and Jack were caught going for their shots and it was Tom Morphett to lead the charge in chasing down the remaining runs. Tom was causing some trouble for the St Mary's bowlers until he was dismissed after a great inning. The boys ended up falling 10 runs short as fatigue of playing two games back - to - back against a fresh St Mary's played its role.

Year 7 Boys Cricket  – Mr Adam Brady

On Monday October 29th, the Year 7 Boys Cricket Team headed to Bendigo to play against Bendigo South East College in the LMR stage of the SSV Cricket Competition. The boys arrived at the ground eager to put their best foot forward. After captain Hugh Byrne lost the toss the team was given the task of bowling first. Noah Turner and Kaden Blachford attacked with the new ball but BSE attacked back and got off to a flying start, scoring 28 runs in the first four overs of the 20-20 match. Kade Northausen, Hugh Byrne and Mitch Shearer tightened the screws when bowling into the wind and restricted BSE to a run a ball. With all their wickets in hand BSE started hitting out when Ryan Stobus stepped up and clean bowled their top scorer. The boys continued to apply pressure and were set a target of 145.

Logan Orr and Noah Turner opened the batting, with a big score to chase. Orr was bowled after trying to attack some quick bowling. Northausen came to the crease and steadied the ship, the two managed to defend some attacking bowling and were left chasing 120 of 12 overs. The boys managed to find the boundary often but the required run rate kept climbing, after Northausen (23) was dismissed. Byrne was brought to the crease. Turner and Byrne hit the ball hard and the bowlers were left looking for answers but were restricted by some loopy spin bowling, which they found hard to hit to the boundary. Byrne (24) was caught on the rope trying to keep the team in with a chance; soon the 20 overs were up with the team left on 3/113. Turner was left one run short of his 50. The game was played in a great spirit and the team would like to give a massive thanks to Angus Martin for coaching and umpiring throughout the tournament.

LMR Basketball – Mrs Ellie Cuttriss

On Thursday the 25th of October, four teams travelled to Bendigo to represent St. Joseph’s College at the Loddon Mallee Region (LMR) Basketball.

We had some great success with the Year 8 Boys and Year 7 Girls who came out firing and successfully finished first, winning their way through to the State finals in Melbourne on Monday the 19th and Tuesday the 20th of November respectively. The Year 7 Boys finished in second place and the Intermediate Boys, fourth.

Year 7 Boys

The Year 7 Boys and Girls only had one, fully timed game scheduled and came up against some tight competition in Girton Grammar School, Bendigo. The Year 7 Girls played a hard fought team game with all girls making strong contributions. Despite a fierce contest with many lead changes, the girls came out on top, winning by only one point!

The Year 7 Boys also put up a great fight in a tough contest against a much taller opposition. Girton came out strong and our boys found it hard to stop their tall timber. Despite this early score deficit, the boys worked hard to fight their way back, winning the second half but unfortunately coming second in a close, high scoring and fast paced game.

The Year 8 Boys had a successful day out, winning all four games and securing a spot at the State Finals. The boys had to fight hard and outplay a smart and accurate shooting St. Joseph's College Mildura outfit to maintain their lead and get the win in a thrilling encounter, but won the other three games comfortably.

The Intermediate Boys started the day well and got a good win against Swan Hill College in a team game. The boys were unable to keep this going when they went on to face some very strong competition in Bendigo South East and SJC Mildura and unfortunately lost these two games.
