Term 3, Week 4

Home Learning

Home Learning

First of all, we feel that it has been another smooth week of Remote Learning. The students are working hard and submitting work to a good standard. As always, please read through all the information included in this weekly Newsletter as well as the Compass Newsfeed, as it contains more specific information about Home Learning. We will also share this information through posts on the Grade 6 Cohort Google Classroom.

We thank you for your continued support and please don't hesitate to contact us via compass with any questions or queries.

GOOGLE MEET SESSIONS:

NOTE: It is a requirement for all students to attend their Google Meet sessions each day. Please could we ask you to remind your child that the Google Meet sessions are like being at school for 30 mins. Some students are arriving to sessions while still eating breakfast, or in their PJs and some are still even in bed. We have also asked students to have their camera's for these sessions.

Information about your child's Google Meet sessions will be posted on their individual class Google Classrooms. This term we will be running more small group Google Meet sessions. It is an expectation that your child attends their sessions each week.

English

Reading

This week Grade 6 will be continuing to summarise texts. This week they will be summarising chapters of a novel. Please ensure that your child has access to Epic.

Writing

We are continuing our unit on ‘The Writing Process’. This unit will take students through the process of planning, drafting, revising, and polishing a narrative piece.

This week we will continue with planning lessons where you study a story arc, read and analyse a sample story, and brainstorm topics until students settle on one for their own piece of writing. Next week, we will move into workshop mode, followed by independent writing time.

Mathematics

We will continue with our focus on Fractions and decimals. This week, we will be looking at multiplying and dividing decimals by whole numbers and mulitplying and dividing by powers of 10 (eg x10, x 100, x1000). Included in the slides are some extension tasks and early finisher tasks.

Unit of Inquiry

This week students will be watching a documentary film. The film 2040 is a 2019 Australian documentary directed by and starring Damon Gameau. The film looks at the effects of climate change over the next 20 years and what technologies that exist today that can reverse the effects. Students will be taking notes during the film and completing a film study sheet after they have watched the documentary.

Contact

We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.

Reminders

Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers. It would be useful if students checked the Google Classroom each day, both in the morning and again in the afternoon, to see if new information or tasks have been added.

Specialist Team

The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students and sharing this with students. Please contact Mrs Travis or Mrs Goosey if you have any questions.

Hearing Unit

Parents of Hearing Unit students, please continue to refer to your child’s weekly HU program. Please contact your child’s Teacher of the Deaf with any queries.
