Rock Your Socks Day

Rock Your Socks Day

On Monday 21 March, everyone at FPS is encouraged to wear coloured, mismatched, bright, long, short – or any other combination of socks – to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day.

Why Lots of Socks?

Lots of Socks is a Down Syndrome International campaign to create conversation and bring awareness of Down syndrome. The idea behind the Lots of Socks initiative is that all types, shapes, sizes of the same thing can be unique in their own way, and yet do the same thing. Children understand what socks are, how they look and what they are for, and children understand that no two socks are the same. Lots of Socks is a campaign to create conversation about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion and acceptance. Across the day, teachers will plan activities around the concept of inclusion, and how we can all help each other to feel included.

What is Down Syndrome?

Our bodies are made up of millions of cells. In each cell, there are 46 chromosomes. The DNA in our chromosomes determines how we develop. Down syndrome is caused when there is an extra chromosome, so people with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes in their cells instead of 46. The extra chromosome is number 21, which is why Down syndrome is also known as trisomy 21.

World Down Syndrome Day

March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, which has been officially recognised by the United Nations since 2012. On this day, people all around the world celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down syndrome, creating a global voice, advocating for the rights, inclusion, and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of socks on 21 March!
