Elevate Education: Study Sensei Session

“The top students outperform their peers not necessarily because they’re any smarter, it’s just because they know how to study and how to work efficiently and effectively throughout the year” – ELEVATE EDUCATION

On Wednesday 10th March our Year 10 and 11 students attended an Elevate Education session called “Study Sensei.” The session focused on teaching students a variety of effective study strategies that they can use to prepare for SACs and exams.

The class discussions and feedback gathered from the students afterwards were incredibly positive. Our senior students should be commended on their mature approach and involvement in the session.  This year we have a large number of students taking part in a VCE subject while in Year 10, we share some comments from the Year 10 Study Skills SIPs class:

Hussain Al Hussainawi 10B

The session made me realise I need to take efficient notes. The presenter gave us new tips and how to take efficient notes. I will use different colours when taking notes, and use cue cards when revising.

Zaraa Anwar Subhan 10I

The Study Sensei Session gave us more tips to study and did fun activities as well. I will try to use the tips they shared when I’m revising for SACs or exams.

Sienna Petkovski 10A

The session gave us confidence and motivational tips to improve our learning and note taking in certain VCE subject areas. I will use this session to assist my learning and use the structural tips to further develop my knowledge. I would recommend this session to Year 10 students in the future as it can definitely support student’s studies and help them to learn different study skills to improve learning outcomes.

Aaron Cornwell 10B

The Sensei did rehash some important key ideas that did resonate with the room. I realised I need to care more about my work. If I take aboard the strategies and utilise the strategies from now on, it will help me in the future.

Bertina Lay 10C

The three key points I took away from the Elevate Study Sensei Session were;

How to prepare for an exam;

How to efficiently take notes;

How helpful mind maps are.

In the future I will take short and simple notes that are easy to remember and to study weeks before tests.

Rebecca Eshun 10D

We learnt that being naturally smart/gifted doesn’t necessarily mean that a person will succeed when it comes to tests and SACS. It takes dedication to study and the ability to memorise - these are the main contributions to academic greatness. The session gave tips on how to be productive and organised when studying. Practice tests are one of the most important parts of studying. Moving forward I would like to lessen how much I procrastinate. Work on strengthening

Ivy Tran 10E

In the Elevate session we learned how to study efficiently, importance of time management, and organisation. The session encouraged us by teaching skills to improve our scores in VCE subjects.

I would use the key points in managing time to review notes and skills to use to improve our achievement levels and performance in tests and exams.

Youlanda Noun 10H

I found this session useful as before I didn’t think of using practice tests before exams. I will also be giving myself at least 3 weeks of studying and breaking the content down. I would recommend this to future year 10 students as I believe it will definitely help them in studying for future exams.

Banin Dirani 10C

The Elevate session helped us to think about how to study for a SAC -Where to look to find help for studying -Methods in which you study taking part in the program. It made me think about the studying methods I currently use.

Panisha Thapa 10E

It was very encouraging because it was delivered by a former year 12 student and a student who is currently studying at university. From now on I’ll colour code everything!

Anna Joji 10E

After attending this session, I would like to improve my note taking skills. The Study Sensei Session supports and encourage students with their VCE studies by including fun activities. I will use the tips given in the session to help me study for my SACs in the future.

Yen Le 10C

Now that I have attended the session, I will focus on not getting so distracted by other things while doing work and manage my time better. Study Sensei can support us by teaching us how to study well and push us towards our goals. I will use these skills to help me with my career, putting what’s important first and doing things that need to be done first, rather than the things I want to do. Using my time wisely, and not revising for a test on the way to the test room.

Karla Roets 10E

The key points that I took from the session included;

- There are many different studying structures you can follow

- Being creative when studying is a good thing

- Have trigger words when summarising notes

Joseph Maroun 10A

We learnt that it is important to do practice questions, don’t write too much, only write things once. The session made me realise that I need to procrastinate less because I waste time doing things that I shouldn’t be doing. The session can support students at ESC, it made us realise that if one method of study isn’t working, we can apply a different one to be successful.

Jamie Bekiaris 10A

The Study Sensei Session supports and encourage students with their studies, it can help because the speaker is pretty good and goes through detailed ways to study for VCE. In the future I will definitely do practice tests. I would recommend this session to students in year 10 next year as it will be an eye opener for some students.
