Magis report

Twelve teams will represent John XXIII College in the 2022 Western Australian Debating League, with fixtures commencing on Tuesday 15 March.  Debates will be held at 4:30pm, 5:30pm or 6:30pm in the E Block classrooms,  and  teams have now been given topics for the first round debates.  Further detailed information including coaching arrangements, preparation sessions and Covid rules will be circulated next week, and the John XXIII Debating Handbook will be out prior to the first round.  See the link below for round one topics and information, and the current team lists which are subject to minor changes.

The House Academic Series has commenced with Years 7 to 10 completed Academic spelling this week and Years 11 and 12 will complete the challenge this coming Tuesday and Thursday.  Despite Covid restrictions we have been able to allow 10 students per homeroom to compete, and the participation rate has been excellent.  St Louis narrowly won the Year 7 section ahead of Loyola, whilst Campion won the Year  8’s by a big margin from Koolyangarra and Ward and Campion lead overall. Full results will be in next week’s newsletter.

Entries will be finalised this week for our four John XXIII teams who will compete in the prestigious Da Vinci Decathlon competition at Winthrop Hall early in Term Two. Preparation sessions will begin in week 7,  and an excellent array of resources are available at school or on the Da Vinci Decathlon website.

Round 1 of the Mock Trial Competition is set to begin on 14 March (Week 7) - with John XXIII College taking part in the first trial of the 2022 season. The team is busy preparing to defend their client (the Accused) in a criminal matter. Due to Covid safe measures, Round 1 will not take place in the Supreme Court building like previous years. Instead, the trial will be held in the Old Court House Law Museum.  Good luck to all team members and warmest thanks to coach Ms Daisy Farley.
