Year 11 Wellness Period - 24 February 2022

During our Wellness period Year 11 students had a ‘virtual’ yet still ‘interactive’ session with Dr Jane Genovese from Learning Fundamentals. The session was called 'Procrastination Buster' and looked at the psychology of procrastination with strategies to motivate yourself at anytime. Here is a  quick recap of strategies

Push through the discomfort

Often when we have to do difficult work, negative feelings can arise (e.g. anxiety, discomfort and fear). We can feel this urge to escape these feelings. We want to run to things that deliver instant gratification (e.g. social media and video games) but we need to resist this urge, stick with the task and push through the discomfort. It usually doesn't take long for the discomfort and fear to subside.

Start before you start

When you get home from school, set up everything you need to do your work. Then take a break (recharge/rest). When you come back to your work, there will be less barriers to getting started. It will feel a little easier to do your work.

The next tiny task

All you need to do is get your book, then open up your book, then read the first sentence... you get the idea. Make the thing you need to do tiny so it's less scary for your brain.

Working in 8 minute power boosts

Set a time for 8 minutes. Take out your work and clear away distractions (e.g. put your phone in another room). All you need to do is work on this task for 8 minutes. When the timer goes off, you have a choice: you can stop or you can keep going. If the motivation has kicked in, keep going. If it hasn't? Go do something else.

The Homeroom teachers and I will be sure to recap these strategies with our Year 11 students.

SPORT

Given all the uncertainty with sport this term, it’s wonderful to see the mass number of students from all year groups attending our morning training sessions. This dedication and commitment are a credit to our students and the sporting culture that continues to grow within the College. Thank you to our wonderful College staff who volunteer their time to provide our students with all sporting opportunities.

Swimming Training

Thank you to all students for taking part in our College swimming training sessions. A reminder that training is open to all students as the coaches are happy to work on fitness as well as competition preparation. We are very fortunate to have past students Timothy Gillman and Patrick Williams lead our morning swimming sessions this Term. Swimming training runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00-8:00am.

Cross-Country Training

Cross-country training numbers continue to grow. All cross-country training sessions are open to all students and run every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00-8:00am. There are exciting new additions to our course this year where students will run on three different terrains and overcome the mound! Students will have the chance to familiarise themselves with the new course in their Years 7-10 Physical Education classes later this Term.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Ruby Rose Johnstone, Year 8, for placing 1st in her Platform and 3rd in her 3m competitions at the 2022 WA Diving - Open State Championships.

Also congratulations to Leila Barker, Year 11, for winning gold in pole vault at the recent Athletics WA State Track and Field Championships. Leila also took home silver in javelin, discus, and bronze in the 100m hurdles. What an achievement
