This Week in the Library...

Welcome to another week in the library, the term is flying with only a few weeks to go.

Harmony Week

Everyone Belongs - Harmony Week
Everyone Belongs - Harmony Week

Over the last week we’ve taken a break from our usual book units and enjoyed one of my favourite themes, Harmony Week. We’ve spent time defining what ‘harmony’ means and learning about the significance of this special day. We’re lucky to have so many students from multicultural backgrounds at our school so we can learn to respect our differences while also acknowledging how much alike we all are.

Stage 3 are enjoying Australian author Kelly Canby’s new book, ‘Littlelight’ which is a beautiful story about tolerance and understanding. It’s tied it well with our visual literacy unit as students have been able to apply what they’ve learnt about the use of colour, focal points (salience), the use of lines (vectors) and also symbolism. A brief outline of the story is:

When bricks start to go missing from the town of Littlelight, the mayor whips his citizens into a frenzy of aggravation. But when the townspeople find the thief, and her motive, they discover perhaps it is the mayor who is the problem.

This story can also be found on Storybox Library here

This year, younger students are also reading ‘Same Same but Different’ by Jenny-Sue Kostecki-Shaw and ‘Whoever You Are’ by Mem Fox, which both explore the things that we all have in common. Stage One students are expanding on this theme and decorating a hand to add to a display in the library about Harmony Day’s theme, ‘everyone belongs’.

Encouraging Reading for Pleasure

Softlink, our library program provider provides some great advice on how to encourage recreational reading at home. You can read the article here or have a quick look at their 6 tips above.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Keep reading everyone and look out for books with the PRC label on them in the library. If you need any help with the challenge and logging in, please let me know and don’t forget you can also access SORA to read ebooks too.

SORA Update

SORA, the school's digital library, has recently had an update and there's now a new way to login using a setup code. The setup code is cenetau and further instructions can be found on the attached document. Students will need their school username and password to login which is available from their class or pastoral care teacher.

SORA also has an extensive collection of Premier's Reading Challenge books for those students participating in the challenge. To find these, go to the 'Collections' section and look for the NSW PRC. If you have any queries, please contact me at school.

Term 1 Book Club

Book Club went home this week and I would like to thank all families who placed an order. The credit we receive from these orders will go towards choosing new books for the library for everyone to enjoy. Our school really appreciates your support.

Happy reading,

Mrs Toni Fraser
