Icy Pole Day Revamp
Icy pole day is having a costume change and returning in Term 4 with an exciting, new, higher quality product.
Student survey results showed a desire for ice-cream to be available on our menu, so this means that instead of weekly icy-poles, we will be offering tropical icy-pole or ice-cream as an alternative twice per term.
The 2018 lunch order survey and 2019 trial of new lunch order provider is part of Ormond Primary School's review of its Healthy Eating Policy, to ensure we are meeting the Victorian Government’s Health & Physical Education Standards. Healthy eating and physical activity are associated with improved learning, better mood, behaviour and healthy growth. To promote the health of OPS students, food supplied by the school aims to be consistent with these guidelines. OPS will therefore offer a treat day or two each term. As always, these events will contribute to the school fundraising.

Foundation News
This fortnight in English we are learning to spell words with the trigraphs tch and igh, and the digraph ai. We are working on new personal writing goals, and as Halloween approaches we are adding exciting words to our stories.
Thank you to the parents who come in each morning to listen to the children read. Some strategies to help young readers when they come across unfamiliar words are to use picture cues, and to look at the starting and ending sounds or letter blends within words.
In Mathematics, the students are consolidating their understanding of place value by learning about two digit numbers. They will be investigating various containers and their capacity to hold liquids and small solids.
In science, each student has selected an animal to learn more about, including why it has particular features, its basic needs, and where the animal best lives and grows.
Persistence is Ormond Primary’s whole school value for Term 4. The Foundation students constantly encourage each other to persist with tasks which might seem too hard at first. In Respectful Relationships we hold restorative circles to share ideas and help each other with solving issues.
Last fortnight we were lucky enough to be visited by Jack the dog from the Responsible Pets program. He helped us learn how to be careful and kind around pets in the home and street. Please enjoy some photos from the visit.
There are some upcoming events for the Foundation students including the Swimming Program. Please ensure consent/payments are processed on Compass prior to the due date to ensure your child can attend these events.
Students also spent time with their buddies recently - see Year 5 News for some photos.
Have a lovely fortnight!

Swimming Program
Swimming lessons will be held once again this year at Waves. Parents who are able to assist are welcome to meet us at the Waves Leisure Centre. All parent helpers will require a Working with Children Check.
Please check Compass Events and/or Compass Calendar for the session times. Please ensure consent/payments are processed on Compass prior to the due date to ensure your child can attend.
English
Writing: We will be studying persuasive writing, narrative and letter writing this term. We will continue to work on improving students’ handwriting as we believe it is important to instill the importance of neat presentation of work.
Reading: The focus will continue to be on comprehension. Students will read daily and be given opportunities to read in front of an audience. When reading aloud at home, focus should be placed on expression and fluency. After book or pages have been read aloud, students should be encouraged to provide a retell of what they have read as well as answering any comprehension questions in relation to the book.

Year 5 News
Foundation and Year 5 Buddy Program
On Thursday 17th October the Foundation students came to visit their Year 5 buddies for the morning. Everyone had a fantastic time and it was fabulous to see the connection and friendship between the younger and older students. The Year 5’s assisted in three activities. They made crafty spiders with lots of eyes and creepy legs, spent some time writing sentences on the school laptops and played some maths games to reinforce their number skills. Everyone looks forward to our next session together in week 4.
Year 5 Virtual Reality Space Incursion
On Monday 21st October the Year 5 students ‘blasted off’ into space with a virtual reality space incursion. This was to support and engage the students in this terms science topic about space. We traveled around the solar system exploring venus, mars and mercury. It was a truly 3D experience that is hard to describe or explain in pictures!
Year 6 2020 Graduation Wear & Sports Tops
Year 6 hoodies, polo’s and sports tops are now open for processing through Course Confirmation/Payments on your Compass parent Portal. Children have tried on sample sizes and slips sent home to parents. If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s teacher.
Ormond Oscars
On Thursday 24th October the Year Five and Six students (along with their families and teachers) had their annual Ormond Oscars. All the students looked magnificent wearing their best Hollywood outfits. Students (as well as some parents and teachers) walked the red carpet, had their photos taken and were interviewed by our school leaders. There was popcorn, a large polaroid frame and a lot of glitz and glam. Then it was time to enter our cinemas for the night to watch the movies demonstrating all the skills they have learnt related to media and movie making. Well done to all involved, it was a spectacular night. Special thanks to Zach for all his work with the students and Mrs. Kah and Mrs. Thanos for their organisation. We hope everyone had a great night!
