Principal's Report

From the Principal...
Term 4 is well under way with many exciting events already held or scheduled for the next month or so. The Ormond Oscars was a true highlight for students, staff and parents alike. The children loved walking the red carpet, being interviewed by our school leaders and then they went on to enjoy the tasty popcorn before hitting the cinemas with family and friends. The short films were entertaining and technically impressive. We thank Zach and the staff for their work with the students on script writing, filming and editing. I am still perplexed at just exactly when they had access to my car and office! Overall, the night was a huge success and the decorations and planning for the event must have required additional time and efforts from the staff involved.
Other significant dates to be aware of throughout this term include the school disco on November 8th and our next Curriculum Day on Friday November 15th. This will be a pupil free day and staff will be working through sessions related to wellbeing and positive behaviour management strategies. The afternoon is dedicated to moderation and reporting in teams with a focus on student outcomes and learning growth.
On Sunday November 24th, there will be a final working bee for 2019. I encourage students, families and staff to attend. Further information will be provided but please lock in this date. There will be a number of tasks to complete, which will also link in with capital works and support classes that may need decanting for the 2020 school year. Please remember that Tuesday November 5th is Melbourne Cup Day and again students are not required at school.
SunSmart
Just a reminder it is compulsory to wear a hat in Term 4, especially as temperatures begin to rise. Children are encouraged to also apply sunscreen and drink water on a regular basis. Please encourage your children to look after their belongings, particularly hats and jackets if they are removed. The amount of lost property continues to be an area of concern at our school.
Transition
In Term 4 every year, students from Foundation to Year 5 take part in a whole school transition session. The opportunity to step up to the next level helps to prepare each student for the next stage in their educational journey. The school recognizes that a successful school transition is vital to a child’s educational, social and emotional development. Students will participate in a range of activities to familiarise themselves with some of the changes that will be taking place in their new grade level in 2020. Students will work in a variety of groups with different teachers during these sessions. You can support your child through the transition process by asking positive questions such as:
- What are you looking forward to the most next year?
- What things are you really good at?
- How can you make new friends?
Our first session will take place on November 22nd and then students will meet their 2020 teacher on December 17th. The next Foundation Transition including the Parent Information session is scheduled for Tuesday November 12th and last week our Year 6 cohort participated in ‘Moving Up’ workshops to prepare them for life in secondary schools.
Planning for 2020
When parents put in requests for teachers, it can make our class planning extremely difficult, and the reality can be that teachers are not yet in place when classes are made up. Teachers do put much time and effort into arranging children into appropriate groups, taking into consideration their academic, social and emotional needs. If you have any particular concerns about your child’s placement due to individual issues, in terms of social, emotional or academic needs, please email the the office by Friday November 8th.
As the number of children attending the school is crucial in our planning, urgent notice of student transfers and exits is also important. This determines our ability to staff our school and plan for the required number of classes. If you have any plans to relocate from our area and/or enrol your children at another school, please email the office as soon as possible.
** This is not necessary for departing Year 6 students.
Community Service Announcement
The school is aware of an increased activity of trespassing and the loitering of individuals and groups on the school grounds after hours, including weekends.
Apart from the mess that is left behind after their visits, these individuals are apparently being loud and disruptive and disturbing our neighbours.
We also have concerns regarding their safety as it has been observed that underage drinking and climbing on the school’s roof and entering the construction site is occurring.
We ask for your assistance in this matter and request that you do not confront these individuals but contact the Caulfield Police on 9524 9500 or Moorabbin Police on 9556 6565 and report this situation. We have alerted the police of these incidences and have assured that they will increase their patrols.
** Please do not call 000 unless urgent medical, fire or police assistance is required. **
