Year 8 Medieval Day

On Wednesday 12th September the Year 8’s were immersed in a day of engaging activities in the form of a Medieval Day. Students were able to take part in a number of exciting and hands-on sessions to support their current unit of Medieval History in the Humanities classroom.

Sessions included:

* Arms and Armour - Students were able to try on armour, as well as give jousting a go. The highlight of this session was definitely students creating a shield wall to protect themselves from incoming ‘arrows’ (tennis balls).

* Music and Dance – Students were introduced to a number of songs and instruments popular in medieval times. They were involved in playing these instruments, as well as undertaking a medieval dance across the oval

* Costume and Lifestyle – Students were involved in an engaging session where they learned about the medieval social structure and lifestyle, as well as trying on many different costumes.

* Games – Students were shown and participated in a number of games and leisure activities undertaken in medieval times.

Student Reflections:

On Medieval Day we learnt about the medieval culture and lifestyle, along with games and the way they dressed. I really enjoyed the music and dance activity, we learned about the kind of music they listened to and the instruments used. At the end of the lesson we did a medieval dance and it was really fun. Another activity I really enjoyed was medieval warfare, where we learnt about battle in medieval times. We got to look at the armour and held some of the weapons and shields. Later in the lesson we had a pretend fight where one team held shields, standing in a line, while the other team attacked with tennis balls. Overall I really enjoyed the Medieval Day and it was very educational. Charlotte Bowley.

Medieval Day was a very good experience for everyone that participated. We learnt a lot of things while having fun. My favourite activity was the games. We learned about how the people entertained themselves and also got to play some games like axe throwing and the tiggy game we played. It was a great experience and learning opportunity. On Medieval Day I enjoyed the fun activities and everything else we did. We learnt all about the games they played, the weapons they used, the clothes they wore and the musical instruments they had. The staff were really knowledgeable about medieval history and they were all really nice. Overall I had a really fun day! Jemma Burley
