Dear members of the Copperfield College, Kings Park community

It is no surprise that the end of semester has crept up on us so quickly. Schools are always a hive of activity, organised chaos and energy. It is easy to forget where all the days and weeks have gone sometimes. A snapshot of what has been happening at the campus over the last few weeks includes:

NAPLAN Online – There was some trepidation with regard to how all systems would function but we experienced very few issues; just some minor disruptions in the first couple of days. All students who were impacted were given extra time. Organisationally, it also flowed smoothly with some amazing teamwork led by our Campus Leaders Pam Farrelly and Brad Rankin. A special thanks needs to be given to Kon Kapodistrias, our campus IT technician. His contribution was above and beyond. A 94% completion rate of all NAPLAN tests which is the highest we’ve ever had. Well done!

Year 9/10 midyear Exams – All completed for another year. This year we are trialling a dedicated two week Post-exam feedback timetable at the Kings Park campus. Teachers will dedicate time to ensure that students are provided with feedback that addresses “how am I going”, “where am I going” and “where to next”. This model of feedback, self-assessment and goal setting is backed by evidence-based research.

Curriculum Day – We would like to acknowledge all staff who nominated to present a Peer2Peer session on the day. It is important for teachers to not only share expertise but also recognise that the expertise does not always need to be accessed outside the school. This notion is also backed by research…the closer to the school your PD is being provided, the more effective it will be.

Morrisby Pathways profiling – A new initiative that much like NAPLAN Online, relied on computer systems. The Readiness testing was conducted on Monday June 3 with the support of our Pathways Leader, Ms Moore and with the Year 9/10 Student Management Team. The actual Morrisby testing was conducted on June 11 and 12 with over 60 Year 9 students. Profiling and feedback sessions with external counsellors is scheduled for Term 3.

Year 8 High Resolves program – On June 11 and 12, our Year 8 students undertook a series of activities and learning from our High Resolves partners. The sessions focused on Community Awareness and Leadership Capacity under the umbrella of Global Citizenship. Students were made familiar with and trained in the behaviours, dispositions, language and mindset to face an ever-changing world once they leave Copperfield College

Year 10 Careers Day – Year 10 students from both Junior campuses attended the annual Year 10 Careers day on Wednesday June 12 at the Delahey senior campus. This important event on the Pathways calendar provides our Year 10 students with an opportunity to look-listen-learn about pathways open to them once they complete Year 11 and 12. Again, big thanks to our pathways team and to the Year 9-10 Student Management Leaders

Multicultural Day – This Wednesday, June 19, our SRC, led by Ms Tauber, have organised a day where we reflect on how fortunate we are as a nation to have embraced all the cultures we have. Students are being encouraged to wear the national dress of their country of origin, bring along and share cuisines from as many of the cultures that make up the Kings Park community into the Old Drama Space and enjoy some dance performances in the C Team courtyard at lunchtime.

Robotics & Makerspace – Mr Hofman has been working tirelessly to drive the passion for all things Robotics and Science-Technology. Currently, the team is supporting their peers with preparing the Kings Park entrants of the Science Fair to be held in Term 3. Just as importantly, he is working to establish the first girls-only Robotics team. We look forward to some good nature Gender Wars fun later in the year

Assembly and Music Concert – Celebration rituals are so important in schools as a tool for developing that intangible, “school culture”. The Kings Park campus will run our end of Term Assembly on Monday June 24. These assemblies are usually uplifting affairs driven by our students and featuring various award winners, event successes, performances and student reports. No doubt the assembly on Tuesday won’t let us down. We have also scheduled a lunchtime music concert in the Open Space for Wednesday June 26 as another opportunity to bring the Kings Park community together and showcase the talents of our Music students through the tutelage of Mr Allen, their music teacher.

End of Semester Reports – With all exams and most assessments complete, teachers are currently preparing student reports for parents. This year, our reports will be completed using the Compass Reporting package. Reports will be published on Compass on June 28. Please spend some time with your child to discuss their strengths and areas for improvement as they reflect on their first semester achievements.

Farewell to Jozef – After almost 10 years as our campus maintenance officer, Jozef Sarwak retired last Friday. Jozef was always available to attend to any staff request with regard to keeping the wheels of the campus moving. Staff and students farewelled Jozef during an emotional morning tea last Thursday. We wish Jozef all the very best in this next chapter of his life. Peter Campbell replaces Jozef in the role. Welcome Peter!
