First XI Cricket Blackfriars vs CBC Intercol Test Match

The annual First XI Cricket Blackfriars vs CBC Intercol Test Match was held on Monday 4, Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 December at CBC Main Oval. Both teams played exceptional cricket and performed well with the bat and ball throughout the match. Unfortunately, Blackfriars lost the 2017 Blackfriars vs CBC Intercol Test Match Trophy.

Day 1

It was a cloudy and wet start to Day 1. Final pitch preparations were being done prior to the match starting. Blackfriars won the toss and elected to bat first. It was a tough start with the first wicket falling in the third over. Riley came in and hit four boundaries in his 22 before being dismissed. Barrington and Kane Flanagan batted strongly and were 2/64 at drinks. Soon after, another wicket fell. Callum Flanagan and Barrington continued to score runs. Barrington was dismissed in the 28th over and put on a 31-run partnership. Flanagan kept finding the boundary and gaps in the field until he was dismissed in the over before tea for 35 off 39 balls. Blackfriars were 5/133. After lunch, Ralph (22) and Krenske (28) kept the pressure on and batted confidently. The tail were dismissed cheaply. Blackfriars finished all out for 180 after 51.4 overs.

Blackfriars now had the opportunity to bowl 17 overs at CBC before the day finished. Ralph struck in the second over the game and had the pressure on CBC early. Spencer and Ralph bowled well but were unable to make another breakthrough. A change in the bowling with Barrington and Riley saw CBC start to struggle. There was still resistance from the opening batsman who continued to score. Two overs before stumps, Barrington took his first wicket and had CBC 2/62. In the last over before stumps, Barrington finished the over with a double wicket maiden! He took his second wicket on his second delivery and his third wicket with the final ball of the day. CBC resume Day 2 on 4/72.

Day 2

Blackfriars needed to take early wickets and start to fight back. CBC started where they finished on Day 1 and were scoring freely. Ralph, in his third over of the day, bowled the batsman to take the first wicket of the day. Next over, Ralph took the much-needed wicket of the opening batsman caught behind sharply by Flanagan. CBC were now 6/105. Criscitelli and Barrington were brought into the attack. Criscitelli bowled accurately, troubled the batsmen and took a wicket maiden in his first over. He continued to keep the pressure on finishing with figures of 2/3 off 6 overs including 3 maidens. Blackfriars had CBC 8/137 and seemed to be on top. The final two batting partnerships were difficult to break. CBC were all bowled out for 176. Barrington finished with 4/35 from 9 overs and Ralph 3/45 from 9 overs including 6 maidens. Blackfriars have a 4 run lead.

Blackfriars commenced their second batting innings. There were only 4 overs to be bowled before lunch. Blackfriars started poorly with Barrington being dismissed with the second ball of the innings and next over Criscitelli was caught. At lunch, Blackfriars were 2/6. Following lunch, Renney and Riley put on a much-needed partnership of 39 runs. Two wickets fell quickly with Renney and Riley both dismissed in the 14th over. Kane Flanagan and Callum Flanagan were now at the crease. Kane batted with some luck but played the ball to all areas of the ground. Callum also batted well and provided excellent support. Their batting partnership lasted 54 runs before Callum was dismissed. Ralph and Fernando made some quick runs as Krenske batted strongly on the other end. Blackfriars will resume batting on Day 3 at 9/140.

Ralph and Spencer opened the bowling with the aim of taking early wickets. Ralph struck in his third over removing one of the opening batsmen LBW. At drinks, CBC were 1/44. A few overs after drinks, an outstanding piece of fielding from Fernando run out the other dangerous CBC opening batsmen with a direct hit! At 2/52, Blackfriars were in the game and kept the pressure on in the field. Barrington took the third wicket with a sharp catch from Renney. Blackfriars still had lots of work to do.
