Year 6 Migration Museum

Year 6 Migration Museum

Recently, the Year 6 students staged a fantastic display of their inquiry into the lives of people who made the journey from another country to live in Australia. After weeks of identifying primary and secondary sources, conducting interviews with migrants, collecting artefacts and preparing all kinds of display material, the boys set the Frassati Hall up as a Migration Museum.

All classes were invited to visit the museum to learn about the reasons why so many people decided to go to all the trouble of moving to Australia. They not only learnt about some of the great hardships but the amazing success stories too.

The boys either built their own suitcase or adapted an old one. Their interactive displays featured photos, maps, interviews, models, primary artefacts, replicas, recounts, reports and so much more! Some even had music and food samples!

Here is what some of the boys thought:

“I think it was a really good experience because we learned about what happened to the people we researched.” Hiep

“It was good because you got to experience different family cultures. It was great to learn how to be a designer and make things like displays and learn life skills like cooking.” Lucas

Here is what some of the teachers thought:

Dear Year 6 Boys, We just wanted to congratulate you on your fabulous display of work Mrs Haskey and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about your special people, both family members and important Australians. We loved seeing your primary sources. We enjoyed hearing the music from different countries and tasting delicacies too! We were particularly impressed by you summarising the most important information about your person. It was evident that you had worked hard researching their life and story. Congratulations, Mrs Wilson and Mrs Haskey.

Here is what some of the visiting students thought:

“I thought it was a great opportunity to explore the history behind migration stories.” Brenton 4H

“The Migration Museum was cool! We got passports which was cool and the variety of different stories was great.” Josh 5B

“It was very nice to get passports and some of the designs were very cool, artistic and nice. The idea of using passports was good because it was like migrating from place to place.” Nicholas 5B

Well done, boys!
